I’m making decent progress on the ‘64.5 Project car I’ve been restoring for a year. So far, the majority of the engine electrics are wired up and in order, but I’ve gotta figure out how to wire up the OE electrics to the HEI distributor. The power steering system is all buttoned up along with the front suspension. The cooling system is nearly complete, and I need to figure out how to install the transmission cooler.

This weekend, I got the rear lights working, and the fuel tank removed and drained of decades old fuel. I think it’s very likely I’ll have this car running and off to paint before the end of August!

In many ways I’m like David Tracy, living in Michigan (no more than 20 minutes away from him, in fact). Except I’m hoarding a total of two Porsches in a rotational state of running or in repair , actively restoring a Mustang, and somehow  haven’t annoyed my neighbors yet. I’m actually not sure how I haven’t done the latter yet.

I say this in jest, of course.

You are 10 times the mechanic David will ever be and your taste in cars (and colors) far surpasses his, as well.

Nice project! Usually when going from points to HEI you mainly need just a solid 12 volts into the distributor. Most older cars had ballast resistors or a resistor wire that cut the volts down to the coil.

Its kind of funny but on my current C10 project, it had HEI in it already when I bought it and I am tossing that out and going back to points.

What’s the reason to go back?  Originality?

spacing to the firewall is one reason, the big cap wouldn’ t clear the new air cleaner, and I prefer points ignition systems. Almost the entire old car fleet in the garage run them without an issue. Heck you can even run a MSD box with them. In the past I have had more headaches with HEI and other electronic ignition systems, while the points have never let me down. I just check the dwell on them every 5/6 months and keep the gap in tune.

The majority of the points system was gone when I got the car. By “majority”, I mean the entire ignition system was gone, and only some kinda Mallory ignition box remained with a crusty ballast resistor I threw out. I’m already gonna have fun tuning a carb, so I figured I should try to simplify where I can.

I agree, I’ve already grounded the dizzy, I should only need send 12v to it for it to function.

Sounds good! I’m about to remove the HEI from my El Camino and replace it with the Holley Hyperspark and the Holley CD box. Should be a nice upgrade to be able to have the Sniper fuel ECU control the timing.

Thanks for all the updates on the C10.  It’s really cool to see the progress and impressive to see the speed with which it’s all coming together.

You’re too kind. I know I’ve had my share of “ dumb classic car moments that could’ve been avoided in hindsight with more time and due di ligence ”. But in the four or five short years I’ve been wrenching, I’ve become more mature, efficient, and  wise .

*Read that last sentence in Clarkson’s voice* :D

Whatever the case may be, it’s impressive to watch. It’s also cool that you seem to start and then actually finish the project.  I’m still working on that last part!

I appreciate it, and that’s a fair point. Though, I must say that every time I finish a project, another one follows soon after, big or small haha.

Whoa! I managed to completely miss that you had this car. Very cool!
