Barely. I passed a cop going the opposite direction, and let’s just say it’s a good thing the road had a barrier.

I took all the touring gear off last night, filled the tank, and have been riding all over the place today. Bike no longer feels particularly big, which I guess means I’m getting used to it!

Day two thoughts below. (gloves were removed to setup the camera and do one quick drive by)

Kinja'd!!!

-Whereas the Miata was just simple, and very much driver focused, this seems like it was designed to be long-lasting, and user-servicable . Almost like the designers/builders had a lot of pride in their work. I took the fairings off, went through the wiring, observed pretty welds, glorious thumbsc rews, plastics that fit together 20 years later better than some vehicles’ fresh off the lot... The Honda clearly wasn’t put together on a Friday afternoon!

-even with the risers the seating position feels way sportier than the Ninja 650 or Ducati Supersport I rode a few days ago. I’m curious how it would feel with the bars in their stock position.

-night rides are amazing. Just cruising around at 11pm, 60°... Almost perfect. Now I just need a cute date!

-Model X, Model 3 (x2) , Alfa SUV , M4, X5M, e46 M3, Carolla with three chihuahuas inside, F type, SRT challenger, Mustang GT, and hilariously enough... A red Stella scooter. What do these vehicles have in common? Well, they’ve all either revved at me at a stoplight, played around on some twisty roads, or tried to rocket past and pass. While I’m sure this will get old eventually, right now it’s an absolute hoot. A hoot I say! The best part is being able to effortlessly pass the brodozers with their turbo 18 Liter V16 Cummins power ego stroker whatever. That was not an option in the Miata, definitely not in the Subaru, the scooter... Yeah . And while the boosted V olvo could probably pass a solid half of the big turbo trucks... I was also afraid I’d hit the throttle and have my engine explode lol.

-if I jumped on—oh, I don’t know—an R1... Would I shit myself? How big of a jump would a modern literbike be?

-I really want to ride this back-to-back with an MT 09.

-how do I get more confident leaning in? I want to be able to drag a knee, scrape some pegs, but like... I also enjoy being alive. I’m unsure where to even start in terms of improving my riding . With the Miata I just went up to the mountains and spent hundreds of hours sliding around until I felt confident going full throttle around practically any curve, knowing I could correct a slide in my sleep. Then I moved on to the same thing, but in the snow. E verything I did in that car was instinct, and I felt confident driving 10/10 in just about any situation.

- I wish I’d kept the blue V70. I very much doubt I’ll find another colorful, manual T5, nevertheless I’m hoping to add a car to the stable in October. Tacoma would be the first pick. Express/sprinter van a close second. Potentially even a mini-truck. Or hell, even an older truck so CoFL will invite me to the vintage vehicle shindigs

I’l l leave you with a slow drive-by.

gl oves were removed to setup the camera and do one quick drive by

but why not put them back on? it takes like 10 seconds and then you don’t have to explain yourself to every dickhead on the internet.

Yes. Nothing reminds me how big S eattle is like crossing the bridge and still having another half hour to go before arriving at a West Seattle address.

I also need more seat time to lean in with greater confidence on my VFR. Head position is more critical than dragging that knee . In fact getting a cheek off the bike, I learned, is so that the bike itself can lean less in the turn. I’ve been watching moto gymkhana videos (those guys don’t knee drag at all, they get penalized for touching the ground ) and been practicing using the rear brake to trail into a turn. apparently using the front brake causes the bike to stand up, while the rear brake does not. I’ve been shopping for a beater bike that I can put a crash cage on so I can drop it at low speeds without worrying. MT03, CB300R, Z400, BMW G310R something like that.

In terms of developing your cornering , I’d recommend continuing to get comfortable with your motorcycle and then seeking out some advanced rider training. There are a ton of courses available in parking lots and on racetracks—Lee Parks’s Total Control classes are a good example—that will get you much more comfortable with the body positioning and other skills that ultimately get you cornering safely to the point where you could drag a knee or scrape a feeler. Don’t try to push it before your skills and comfort level on the bike get to that point.

“how do I get more confident leaning in? I want to be able to drag a knee, scrape some pegs, but like... I also enjoy being alive.”

Long Read...

I can’t say I advocate doing it on the street, it does make me a hypocrite because I’m constantly attempting it.

The first thing for knee down is to learn the body position. Primary are the 3 main points of contact for stability in corner: your ass, inside foot and outside leg inner thigh/knee. + then your hands.

Shifting your ass halfway off the seat and the leg is easy for most. People tend to struggle getting their upper body and head to follow. They get “crossed up” and they look like a goof and actually don’t corner well:

Kinja'd!!!

In the same way leaning the moto is unnatural at first, it’s the same when you start to hang off. You have to practice over and over and condition your brain to accept it.

If I’m honest, if you focus too hard on decking the knee you’ll likely be slower than working on body position and increasing the corning speed and just letting it happen. You have to work up speed gradually so you don’t psyche yourself out.

I watched Motojitsu, life at lean and other sort of stuff to develop. To do it properly I would recommend a course. If you must do it on the street, don’t do it on a undivided road with traffic that could come at you and the slower the corner the better. Motojitsu does it in the parking lot at like 30-35mph... I have a corner I know well, it’s rated for 25mph that I coast in at 60-65 to practice.

I’m unsure where to even start in terms of improving my riding.

Start with your mentality about the bike and how you approach any time you will be on it. The very last thing you should be thinking about is how hot you’ll look taking videos of yourself. Even further away should be taking videos of yourself treating the open road like a racetrack.

The best way to improve your riding is slowly attaining experience and remembering everyone and everything is trying to kill you in some form, fashion, or just unabashedly straight on going for it.  SIDPE.

time on the bike is one way how to improve your feel, but habits can start early and may not be the right ones. dragging a knee at the perfect speed for the perfect radius feels damn good, but IMHO, being able to avoid the pothole/truck/deer/gravel patch/oilspot/whatever is on that line is more important.

the easiest starting point for turn in i think is do all your braking while upright before entering. try to keep the suspension consistently loaded through the turn before rolling on the fun hand as you approach the exit.

have fun, keep the rubber side down.

I’m really enjoying the Honda. Only took two years of saying “I’m getting a bike” before it happened!
