I was scrolling through Facebook Marketplace and found an $89k McLaren and the photo’s seemed a little off so I googled the VIN. I kinda expected some sort of salvage vehicle but wow. This thing was destroyed. I think watching some of those Samcrac’s Youtube videos when I first learned about how people will buy salvage cars, clean them up just enough, and resell even though underneath nothing is really fixed.

VIN - SBM14DCA0JW001479

Before - Looks like the bidding ended at about $35k

After - on Marketplace for $89,000

I'd be wary of any supercar that's "only" had $45k in repairs after being smashed like that.

It might run and drive - at 10 km/h, and pull strongly in either direction.

You wouldn’t believe the number of salvage cars I see every week, and usually the owner has no clue.

Someone wrecks a 100k Benz. Some shady piece of shit buys it for a few grand and does a few grand worth of work to make it look pretty ok to the untrained eye. Then they sell it for 75% of the next cheapest comp and make a ton of money.

Then new owner comes in because something doesn’t work, then we find electronics filled with water, airbags that weren’t replaced, body work that’s only slightly better than your McLaren.

And the owner is fucked. They probably stretched to afford the thing in the first place.

It almost had more curb appeal before they “fixed” it

Additionally, a certificate of destruction means that it can’t be used for street use and I wouldn’t trust damages like that for track use. Only thing it’s good for it parts. It had a ton of money in parts at $35k, less of a value at almost $90k

That is a really good distinction . Thankfully this won’t be something that is title washed and put back on the street.
