Those are the best kinds of dinner, they work great for camping too, fish does well too.
Looks yummy.

I'm in debate between doing those and hobo stew when camping next weekend. Tinfoil surprise is probably my go to but man is a nice warm stew a great part of a camping trip. Guess I could always just do both given enough firewood!

Hobo dinners cooked in a campfire are fantastic! I hope there’s a Dutch oven cobbler to go with it!

Im a fan of stews, one that I’ve been big into is mixing chilly and kielbasa sausage. Add some cheese and you’ve got yourself a meal.

fish is no for me. This is my 4th attempt at these this year and I’ve finally nailed it. These were amazing.

We had left- over dutch oven cornbread. I know it’ s going to sound weird but im not a cobbler fan. It’ s like a shake, it’ s a whole meal and a dessert when I just want a little something extra with the main course.

Our usual ones consisted of ground beef, salt and pepper, thinly sliced onion and potato, and some butter (margarine). Something about the fire makes it taste better than it sounds.
I have a random unrelated question for you. The other day I was changing brakes on the van. The tires are only R16 size, so not very big. It got me thinking, how do folks manage to change those huge overlanding tires when out in the bush? I'd think anything over 20" would be really difficult to lift onto the studs. Is it just a matter of being more careful with lowering/raising the vehicle to just the right height, then somehow levering it on?

I love a good cornbread too. But it’s hard to ignore a good campfire dessert. My favorite is biscuits stuffed with Rolos cooked in a cardboard oven and dusted with powdered sugar. Yeah, I have a sweet tooth.

My tires are pretty small relatively speaking but basically I sit down once the tire is close and put my legs on either side and use my legs bending my knees to lift it that last 2 inches onto the studs. The big trucks require a winch to get the spare down then I think you lower the truck onto the studs

That would make sense.
It’s probably my limited perception, but it seems like there’s two different crowds that go off-roading: the overlanding crowd, which is more interested in seeing neat/new things and exploring, and then there’s the rock crawling/technical driving folks that are more interested in going over some crazy stuff, and maybe a bit less interested in exploring. I wonder how some of those rock crawling guys manage to change those monster 32" tires while stuck on the rocks in some semi-remote location. That Rob Gray fellow from Australia with his ACCO had some sort of onboard crane. There's no way a single person could lift a tire that size.

In developed campgrounds when it isnt a high fire alert of some sort, yeah. But definitely not in any sort of backcountry environment. Thankfully this trip Im just car camping so I can camp fire to my hearts content assuming the wind isnt too crazy then.

Generally the purpose of hobo stew is that you throw in whatever scraps you have laying around. I will do a sautee of onions, garlic, peppers. And then throw in beef stock, carrots (pre boiled), tomatoes, canned crush tomato, and cooked ground beef. Then cook it a while and add egg noodles to finish it off.

Yeah I bought a big sack of smoked sausage, some beef hot link variety that I found at the store. That will get used in pretty much everything. And I will enjoy roasting those on a stick instead of a boring ass hot dog. I love to eat well when camping, especially when I have shown up with a car rather than a backpack.

Ah Damn . Ya struck a memory. Walking the AT 50-years ago with Mom (RIP) a nd my brother. We’d take a week every year and walk a section. This was the 1st trip ; I was 10. K’Nobs were Jiffy biscuit mix made into balls and fried in margarine in a tall 1-quart pot on our SVEA 1 23 stove . Then rolled in Cinnamon and sugar . An incredible delicacy on the trail! Burned my mouth every time. Jiffy Cornbread was cooked in that pot for breakfast to add to Mountain House ‘stuff’. Thank you.

Dang, all outdoor fires are banned in all except one portion of Arizona. You’d think after last year CA would have something similar.

Yeah a 37 inch mud terrain (the new standard crawler size) weighs close to 100 lbs per corner. My 33 weighs about 75 with wheel.

That sounds like a wonderful experience. While we didn’t have many camping experiences when I was a kid, my mom and I took an epic trip around the western US when I was a young adult. I love it when someone reminds me of that trip.
I’m glad I was able to spark a cherished memory for you.

campfires in campgrounds dont tend to be the leading cause of forest fires. Doing something about the electrical grid, now that would actually make a difference!

Yeah, we haven’t had rain in a while, so no fires period. My BIL is a hotshot. Tries his hardest to stay out of CA forests. Says forest management and CalFire are a shit show.
