UPS brought me some new speakers for the front doors to go with the new radio and dash speakers I put in a few days ago. These are some mid-range 5 1/4" Kenwoods that Crutchfield sent me. This time the 26 year-old factory speakers looked a bit more liked I expected with some tired, brittle woofers and a small tear on each woofer surround. Unlike with the like speakers, but smaller, in the dash, there are a lot more options for the front doors. Crutchfield says they’re limited to 5-1/4", but I saw no reason some 6 1/2" couldn’t fit with a bit of messaging the plastic factory speaker mounts.

I also found door seal was missing on one side (probably from a window regulator replacement by the importer), so there will probably be some dynamax and plastic sheeting in its future (and hey, there’s no creep like scope creep, but that’s a project for another day).

The sound with the two sets of new front speakers and the new receiver is vastly improved, and it plays music in the modern ways. If I had to evaluate it overall, I’d say the mid’s and high’s are pretty good and the bass response is crisp, even if lacking a bit in overall punch down low. For two sets of little speakers up front, I’d consider that expected. It should be able to take 7" or 6x9" in the rear, so that may improve when I order some bigger new speakers for out back.

This will never be anything special for audiophiles with amps, subs, component speakers and the like, but it should end up with legitimately okay sound for less than $350. For an old adventure mobile, that should do nicely.

Looks great! Careful with the dynamat of you’ll want to make your adventure mobile quiet and that’s a tough task.

You’re keeping the project creep admirably in hand I think, better than I usually do anyway...
