With Texas being one of the hot zones for Coronavirus infection spikes, the governor finally mandated that masks must be worn in all public places yesterday. (But only in counties with more than 20 documented infections, and he has exempted polling places where, you know, hundreds of people gather and wait in line. He says he doesn’t want people to not vote because they have to wear a mask). Until then, it had been up to individual counties and cities to set their rules, and many of the non-urban areas chose not to make them mandatory. Austin, which mandated masks a few days ago, has been going all out to let people know about the new requirement, with robocall and text alerts Wednesday ahead of the Fourth of July weekend. But a new text alert just came out, complete with the ESB warning tone, announcing that failure to wear a mask could result in a $250 fine. I’m all in favor of this. I just wish the governor had done this months ago.

I am fatigued by this entire affair. My grandson is due in four weeks and by that time, there will likely be Mount Vesuvius of coronavirus infections because FOJ. And Utah, which isn’t as mule headed as Idaho... Texas’s lieutenant governor says that Anthony Fauci doesn’t know what he is talking about; do the Texas governor and lieutenant governor hate each other?

I have no idea if they are on speaking terms. Texas elects the governor and lt. governor on separate ballots. I just desperately hope nothing bad happens to Abbot. The idea of Patrick as governor scares the hell out of me.

Funny how they suddenly care about voter suppression when it’s deeply red people who would be missing out on voting

In a way, I do have a bit of sympathy for state governors. Texas is the world’s 5th largest economy, and it had to be restarted at some point. The problem is that Abbott went too fast, without taking any time to see if stage one caused any problems. Of course, all the people hitting the lakes and beaches and parks, and having graduation parties, over the Memorial Day weekend seems to be what is really driving this. If they had opened and mandated masks at the same time, we might be maybe a little bit better off. Or maybe less terrible.

Same here. Newsom just constantly gets crucified for such things , when all things considered I think he, like most other governors, are doing the best they can with a terrifyingly fluid situation. It’s worse here because the population is just so damn big. Memorial Day fucked us, because despite closure and distancing orders , people partied. And a large portion of our state migrates to other parts of the state on holiday weekends. So lo and behold, we have monster spikes now because people were selfish and let their guard down . Our county of under 300,000 was consistently under 10 cases a day, sometimes zero, now it’s over 30 a day, every day . And it’s about to happen again. And still, a large percentage of customers and the general public just don’t seem to care. It’s unbelievably frustrating.

The problem is that, when the lockdowns were lifted, people acted like everything was all over and it was back to normal. If we had opened very gradually, WITH mandatory masks, we might be a bit better off.

Yep, which is exactly what we were instructed to do. Phased reopening, masks & distancing, not unreasonable . But in actual practice, people are too selfish and dumb to do this . Especially the college age younger people around here, and, shall we say, people born between 1946 and 1960 or so . Ahem.

I went to the grocery store this afternoon to get a few things for the weekend. The place was hopping, though not as busy as I’ve seen it. Everybody was wearing masks (a few didn’t cover their nose, which makes the whole thing worthless), but I was struck by how normal it all felt, aside from the masks, even as COVID cases are higher than they ever were during the lockdown. Shouldn’t we be doing what we were doing then? Limiting the number of people in the store, enforcing SD, all of that? There’s no stomach in this country for going back to those restrictions, but it worked then, it would work again.
