Well considering how easy it was for me to find eSys and the ENET Cable...

Gimme the hardware, you can paywall it you want, I’ll enable it myself. I don’t think they thought this through.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

First it was them trying to make CarPlay subscription based, then there’s Tesla soft-locking batteries...

Question: what arsehole thinks it's a good idea to charge people twice for things? If my car has heated seats, obviously I've paid for the hardware as it's in the car, and no way are they going to take a loss fully kitting out a car and charging less for the buying price to have those features "locked". And who would buy a car that does that?

That’s common practice on big rigs. You want another 100 hp? Pay Freightliner and they’ll send a code and we’ll flash the truck’s computer and you’ll have another 100 hp.

That’s also how big machinery is being sold. My friend bought a bulldozer that requires a PIN to start. It also reports back to home base when it has problems. He was moving dirt when he received a call. “Mr. Dozerdriver? We noticed that the engine isn’t running to spec and have already dispatched a technician to your site. Hang tight and he’ll be there in an hour. Directions? No need. We know exactly where you are.”

The problem with this idea (ok, there’s a ton of problems) is that it could (and hopefully will) seriously backfire on BMW.

If Audi and Mercedes say “ fuck that, we actually like our customers,” then it will cause people to jump off the Bavarian gravy train, and onto other brands. If they want to risk the black eye, I say go for it, but don’t be surprised when you get buried alive for it.

Also, side note; whoever is coming up with these ideas is a true to form fuckface and needs to be punched square in the nose.

They do this all the time with electronics. I’m thinking of the Rigol oscilloscope. Two models with different prices. People can unlock the features of the more expensive model. Cheaper for Rigol to manufacture and hit two different customer bases.

That’s creepy.  Not just big machines but electronics like my example to CB.

Thing is they already tried this and backtracked. That’s exactly what happened with the CarPlay debacle, yet somehow they thought it’s a good idea to try again.

Big-wigs with MBAs, probably. Gotta answer to the shareholders.

If it’s something like a service agreement that’s attached to some sort of maintenance SLA, then it might actually make sense to do that. Besides it almost sounds like the equipment is leased rather than outright purchased. This sounds very similar to how photocopiers are sold as service packages where they include toner and bill you by the usage count. For businesses this might make sense as it becomes an expense for operating , but applying this to the consumer market won’t really fly. This is EA level of DLC asshole l ery.

I’d think it would be easy enough to circumvent as long as you are willing to do a bit of wiring yourself.

Likely easier than that. The earliest F30s actually had all the hardware required to enable Bluetooth streaming, even when the option was not purchased. All took was the right software.

More people than you’d like to think. Fortnite made $1.8Bn in 2019, and it’s literally free to play.
