I had also ordered some new speakers for the dash corners to go along with the new head unit installed yesterday evening.
I removed the grills to find the expected, factory 26 year-old speakers underneath. To Mitsubishi Electronic’s credit and my surprise, they were in fantastic shape. I’ve never seen factory speakers that old in that good of condition.
They’re both like speakers, only smaller. The options aren’t unlimited in 4" speakers, so some relatively basic Kenwoods found their way to my house with the head unit. They fit nicely, and the sound is improved and m ore full over the original speakers. Mids are a lot clearer, and while I doubt any 4" speaker is going to wow with bass output, these have noticeably a bit more down low. This feels like $40 well spent.
Because there’s no creep like project creep, I went ahead and ordered some new 5 1/4" speakers for the front doors. They should be here Friday.
As a bonus project, I also removed the back seat from the truck. I have no use for it, and I bought the truck as an adventure mobile. That specifically means guaranteed dry place to sleep. There is now so much more room for activities!

Holy hell is the backseat heavy. The 3rd row from a gmt400 suburban weighs a whole lot less. That thing weighs at least 150lbs. I’ll have to clean the carpet under the seat this weekend.

That thing is cavernous without that rear seat. I’m all for the removal of it, I’d do the same if it were my truck.

I drove a Plymouth minivan for years and it spent 90% of its time with only two captains chairs in it. I could even put my dirt bike in the back of it.

My plan, when my audio project finally happens, is to replace the door and rear speakers with some 5x7 Polk Momos that I have laying around, replace the head unit with a JVC (that I bought for my ZJ before deciding to put a Sony hu that my friend had laying around) and get a Sony or Kenwood mini amp for that setup, and then get a cb radio to go under the head unit and use the dash speakers for the cb radio.

Nice. I’m also planning a CB for the second DIN slot, although I haven’t yet decided on an antenna setup that will clear the garage door. I’m thinking I’ll probably do the s ingle DIN sized Cobra that has a front facing speaker built- in.
Do you have the fsm downloaded? You’ll probably need it for the head unit wiring. Mine had a completely different wiring scheme from a US Montero, and the Haynes Pajero manual wiring diagram wasn’t even close to what was actually in the truck.

I might have it, I actually don’t remember. I have a whole folder of Pajero-related forums and some webpages full of various manuals and such. As soon as I’m done with the ZJ, I’ll start planning the Pajero since there’s a number of things on it that don’t work that I’d like to get working.

A good friend of mine did that from the day h is former Voyager was new until I hauled it off to the wrecking yard for him a couple of years ago. As a biker who once got to competing in international races at the semi-pro level, he enjoyed the ability to just stash bikes and anything else in the back at will.
