Kinja'd!!!

I got a new Canyon Grail which came with tubes and gravel tires. Tires are noisy and I’m planning on being 99% asphalt so I am installing new Panaracer 650B x 38mm Gravelkings.

I have total of one prior experience replacing a 27.5 x 3" tubeless on my mtn bike. That one seated using my floor pump.

I tried squeezing the tread down with a circumferential wire, rope, and now ratchet strap (photo). Air compressor. Sealant. Came with tubeless tape. Installed valves. I cannot get the beads to seat.

The wire seemed closest to work but popped off. Can’t get the string to stay on. Retry the wire and tighten it all the way to the rim?

Anything else? I’m asking Oppo before searching bike forums.

(what’s with this “photo does not have certain rights” message on Kinja?)

UPDATE: Thank you !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

No valve core and blow gun was ridiculously easy. Pop, pop, pop. I didn’t see Silent’s advice to wear ear protection (eye protection would have been a good idea too). I hate surprise loud noises.

There’s a creative intelligence that I’m not good at. It never occurred to me to use something other than the compressor air chuck. Since that is what you’re supposed to use to inflate tires.

We’ll see if they’re still holding pressure tomorrow.

Kinja'd!!!

After seating the beads, adding sealant, replacing the valve core, I cheated with a Presta adapter and the blow gun to get me started on hand pumping the rest of the way to the max 60psi. I’ll let it sit at 60 overnight. I plan to run 35psi F and 40psi R when I ride.

Main trick is that you need a decent volume blast of air which only a tanked compresser can really supply. Next trick is to remove the valve core and just use a blow gun attachment - get the beads seated then put your finger over the valve stem to hold the air back and then insert the core . Further trick is cable ties can help with the one handed tyre squashing...though the ratchet straps trick always worked if I needed to go that far...

I have the compressor (in the pic). Will try it minus the valve core and with a blow gun.

I just read the internet saying leave an inflated tube in there overnight. Will put that on the list.

Was wondering if skinny road tires needed different tricks than fat mtn bike tires. The ratchet strap wasn’t forcing the beads out to the rim

Last time I did tubeless, i had to eventually go to a bike shop with a compressor. I also found gorilla duct tape worked great for rim tape. Just tear it down the middle. I also used Orange Seal. The trick with a compressor is for it to push the air pressure, but not so much it exceeds the tires rating and blows the bead off the rim. I also ran sealant around  the rim edge, and in the rim. You will get messy so put some newspaper down. First tire worked well with the tire pump, pumping like a mad man wiht the wheel on its side, over a bucket so the spokes were suppoirting everything. The second wheel just didnt take and the bike shop easily did it.

When you do get it on and the bead seated, keep spinning the wheel at angles so the ‘juice’ gets into the bead and everywhere else in there. youll see bubbles come out the sides here and there but it will seal...just make sure the seal is getting coated all over inside. Also check pressure and keep it well inflated.

you may just need a shop.

Shop is always last resort!! I’m doing all your tips, I believe. See pic.  With added mess.

Check the new tires, they should be tube less compatible but they may not be? The tire bead should set tight in the grove of the rim it should be hard to put on the rim , if it is loose then it will never set.

Yes, tubeless ready tires. Can’t get the beads out of the well and anywhere near the rim hooks. After dinner, g onna try @Silent’s valve core/blow gun tip. Then a tube overnight if that fails.

I use an air compressor to set the beads, usually without sealent. I pull the valve core and use the air chick to blow in massive amounts of air really fast. It’s always worked.

That’s where SilentButNotReallyDeadly.. ’s tip to use a blow gun comes in.

I f you’re using the air chuck without a valve core, then you don’t have that center pin to activate the air chuck?

use the blow gun

The inflated tube trick is to set the rim tape... doesn’t help with the beads at all (for obvious reasons).

The beads being stuck in the centre well is a good sign the blow gun will work. Try lubing it (rim/bead interface) up first though with a bit of dishwashing liquid in water...just to help it pop out.

Inflate only until you hear the bead CLICK into position....no further. Otherwise you risk blowing the tyre off the rim. Which isn't fun. Wear hearing protection just in case...

Well, not this, but this is what you’re up against. Gotta inflate that thing fast.

Put the tube back in, pump it up and get the bead to seat on both sides. Th en take the tube out, being very careful to keep the bead seated on the opposite side you take the tube from .

Also, use at least double the amount of recommended sealant.

Some magazine suggested the tube tip - sets one of the beads so you’re 50% ahead.  As updated the blow gun worked a hell of lot better.  Thanks.  Your other tips are good - luckily didn’t need them.

This thread is amazing for me! I will definitely be going at mine with a compressor and blow gun next time I try. I struggled for hours with my floor pump and eventually gave up and just put the tube in. Thank you for posting this as I was looking for advice like this!

Good tips, thanks. Too late on p utting newspaper (they still exist? ) down - I messed all over the floor.

I updated. No valve core and blow gun made it ridiculously easy.

Excellent. I’m glad it helped someone else. I always have a little worry in the back of my mind that I rarely post car stuff here.

Ask me anything about this - now I’m an expert!! :)

No valve core, blow gun, pop pop pop, ridicu lously fast and easy after struggling with it all afternoon like you.  Then add the sealant.  Pump back up.

I’m also using Orange.  Good tip about Gorilla Tape.  I assume there’s nothing special about tubeless rim tape other than it’s not porous?  Like you could use electrical tape?

I have, on a much smaller tire. I think the pressure that builds inside the tire as the ether burns and snuffs out the combustion. And available oxygen gets used up. I think.

Electrical tape won't stick well enough. The slime will get under it. But duct tape is probably heavier than Stan's rim tape...but we're talking grams not pounds.
