some 96 shells
Found a SAAB specialist somewhat nearby to take my new 1998 convertible for some maintenance. When we drove up I knew we were at the right place:

This is a SAAB story I don’t mind. Sad though, to see all those SAABs doomed to the scrap heap, even if for the noble cause of allowing others to live. The 96s are particularly sad.

I nearly bought a red, manual, 01, Aero wagon Like 5 years ago. Sometimes I regret not going for it, but I really didn’t want another FWD car. It had those real hot BBS wheels tho.

Forgot to post this rather sad Sonnet:
but at least clean 99 is clean:
I was sur prised it was the only 99 in the whole place. They must be extremely rare nowadays.

A few years ago I saw a picture of my father in law’s house from the day he bought it, like 15 years ago. In the front yard there was a yellow Saab like that just sitting. I asked him where the Saab went and he said he scraped it because it was sitting where the garage needed to be built. That was a real bummer.

That 99 is sharp! Either it’s been restored or came off the road every winter, if those NY plates are any indication of where it normally lives. They certainly didn’t rust as badly as the Japanese cars of the era, but New York & much of New England weren’t exactly light-handed with the road salt when those were new.

Here’s the four-door 99 my parents had when I was little, c. 1978. It was old and battered but still loved by the time I remember it. I t didn’t pass PA inspection in about 1986 for rust and my dad sold it and bought the first of many Camrys.
And h ere’s a somewhat rusty one I spotted a couple years ago, the only other 99 I’ve seen IRL in probably 30 years.

They’re absolutely lovely. I’ve always found the 99 sedan s more appealing than the hatches, but I’d be happy with either at this point, if I could find one that was neither trashed nor absurdly priced . Southern Vermont was absolutely filthy with them in well into the 1980s , and they’re one of very few cars of the era for which I have much nostalgia.
Have you posted that blue one before? Looks kinda familiar.

I’ve posted that pic in comments before yes. I found it in my parents slides from the 70s years ago when I was scanning them. Am I right in thinking the 4-doors must have been somewhat rare? I’ve seen plenty of 2-door pics but almost never a 4.
Incidentally my dad was a pipe-smoking, tweed jacket with leather patches- wearing, SAAB- driving college professor in the 70s and 80s.

I don’t remember the 4-doors being especially rare, but maybe it was a regional thing. 2 vs 4 seemed pretty evenly split in southern VT, at least among the many, many people I knew who had them.
Weren’t buyers issued jackets with elbow patches, or was ownership of such a prerequisite for purchase? ;-)
