It’s Fat Albert!
The first official shot of the Blue Angels’ new C-130J support aircraft, Fat Albert, and its socially distanced USMC crew. Not only is it a new ship, it’s also a slightly updated livery. From the BA Facebook:
...you will notice a couple changes to the paint scheme. The flight surfaces now have yellow tips, similar to our F/A-18s, 2 stripes run down the side of the aircraft and the iconic white top has been changed to a tear drop design.

The photo was taken in the UK, likely because the Herk was purchased as surplus from the RAF. Buying used reportedly saved the Navy about $50 million over the cost of a new J, and allowed the Brits to take the depreciation hit. The J model can fly farther than the older T model, and can carry a greater payload. Look for the new Fat Albert at an air show near you.
One of these days.

I’m surprised. They don’t give the Angels the latest and greatest.

The Blues are transitioning this year to Super Hornets, so there’s that. But the oldest E/Fs are still 20 years old. Not sure the vintage of their new rides.

Given the needs and the mission, its hard to beat a C-130 for lighter payload items.

That looks sharp as hell!

One of my absolutely favorite airplanes.

Still no more JATO take offs.

I’m undecided about the teardrop white. The “ Blue Angels” crosses the line between the blue and the white, and I’m not sure that works. But I do see it as a reference to the angled line in the squadron crest.

I count myself fortunate to have seen that a couple of times back in the day.

Depreciation? I’m not buying that excuse. Does their military really depreciate their assets for tax purposes?

That was my joke. I have no idea what the tax implications are. Does the military pay taxes? I thought the just spent them.

I was so good at spending, taking the grenade cannon to the range area is fun.

I’ll give you that isn’t the best looking part of it but I think the livery works as a whole.

I got to find a version (or make one) that isn’t censored.

You know Fat Albert is a Marine Corps operation because they bought the aircraft used.

Indeed. One my favorite air show pics I took of Fat Albert was in Fort Worth back in 2014. I had the camera set for the jets, so the shutter was too fast to get a nice prop blur (rookie mistake). Still a dramatic shot, though.

That looks amazing! I can’t wait for air shows to be back...
I was planning on going to Oshkosh this year but that’s not happening.

It’s been more than a year since I’ve even been to the airport to take pictures. And the last air show was March of 2019. I miss it big time.

But the Navy didn’t crash it, set it on fire, then pee it out first , so this is still an upgrade.

If any military did, I wouldn’t be surprised if the British were the first to try it.
