Reeling from an earthquake, a flooding, and then an assassination attempt, Mexico City has gone from the most serious phase 4 of the pandemic to the slightly less serious phase 3 today. Despite all evidence indicating it’s far too early to open up businesses in Mexico City again, our mayor is positively excited to restart activities, and as the biggest city in the country, we also serve as an indicator of how others should reactivate their economies. Mexican states, as independent health authorities superseding current federal powers, choose their own phase in the pandemic stoplight, from red, orange, yellow, green.
Since it’s up to the states, the stoplights have been treated... erm, in a strange way. The stoplight’s primary indicator is hospital occupancy, which is why relatively rich states like Jalisco have opened up despite fast-growing spread as opposed to Tabasco which has had very high numbers for a number of weeks now. Despite having around a fifth of all accumulated cases in the country, Mexico City also has one of the lowest hospital occupancy rates, which is why we’re much more eager to open than neighboring Estado de Mexico and Morelos.
Not that the data actually means anything, Mexico has one of the lowest testing rates, which might correlate to a higher than usual mortality rate of 12% Alls I know is that I don’t see this thing dying anytime soon, and I think we’ll just get used to seeing bigger and bigger numbers as months go by... regardless of what the stoplights say.
Also, I haven’t used my car regularly in like seven months now... I turned it on last week. It was 80 days late to service 0.0

I read an article in the local news here in Austin where UT researchers told the city that if everybody wore a mask, and everybody practiced social distancing, we’d see reductions in hospital numbers by October.
October.
T his was the scene in downtown Austin over the weekend, as people gathered to protest having to wear a mask. Meanwhile, the governor of Nebraska threatened to withhold medical funding for any city that required face masks.
If you’re wondering, the asshole on the left is wearing a shirt that says, “Snowflakes don’t last long in Texas.” Nice.

Oh my... That sounds bad.
I heard the NYT’s podcast yesterday and there was an episode on Texas... Sounds like a clusterfuck up there... Just like here!
I just feel like the contagion will continue, it won’t be contained, it'll just get all of us eventually. Its just a logistical nightmare, and impossible given our current economic system.
Nuevo Leon made it illegal to “wilfully” spread covid19, whatever that means... And I think our president is planning a trip to Washington tomorrow. Some say to endorse Trump.
I hope y’all stay safe and use the relevant safety gear.

I hate to say it but I’ve concluded that this is like groundhogs day and we have 9 more months of this before any major reduced risk is present for the population.

over here we seem to have it under control for the moment....
i mean...businesses toppling over left right and centre and it looks like 6ft society may be a forever thing so thatll probably kill the remaining bars and restaurants and musicians may want to start thinking about new careers.. and the counties are threathening tax hikes to pay for rona and health insurance is set to go up in price too
whilst my income is down as overtime aint happening anytime soon
looks like the next few years are gonna suck but fewer people getting sick under control

We wear our masks whenever we go out. Period. I will say, though, that most of the places where we shop have a clientele that masks. I think compliance is at least 90%. I’m staying the hell away from places where asshole like this would show up.

I can say that at least here there’s no stupid culture war issues around mask wearing... Shamefully people don’t wear masks because they don’t believe in Covid19. At least since it isn't a culture war issue, you can't actually access stores or public transportation without a face mask... So we have a semblance of adoption.

What makes me frustrated is that wearing a mask reduces transmission anywhere from 50-80%, which is probably as good as the first vaccine is likely to be. And we already have masks, and they are cheap, and they are safe, and won’t require a billion dollars in development, and.... people are just stupid. FFS even Dick Cheney and W are wearing them, is that not conservative enough ? I’m mostly mad that my mom and MIL in Texas are going to be exposed because of the selfish actions of these idiots.
The governors are busy making sure the band plays their favorite songs while the Titanic goes down.

Live music hasn't died here. I wish it would for a little while longer though.

its near death here...the venues cant turn a profit whilst maintaining social distancing rules and outdoor festivals are pretty much verboten till further notice
small gigs upto a hundred people might start again next month so that’ll pack a few pubs for a while....maybe

Are the musicians near death or the music industry? ;)
Some restaurants, bars, etc have been packing out for small live bands but really I think that is worse than a properly distanced open air gathering.

lol....uhh..the industry i guess..tho the musicians who rely on gigs for income aint doing so hot either
i think your probably right about packing a bar being worse than a properly distanced outdoor event..
but still..properly distanced is the main problem as it means events can have maybe 25% of their usual attendance (and i dont really see the public making up for that by paying massively higher ticket prices)

Yes. Bigger venues require more money, more planning, and more security. So as it is, crowded bars are the only way to see some live music right now.
