UPDATE: I pulled the ma nual out of the glovebox and actually looked at the chart (as I’d been going by memory):

Kinja'd!!!

What I take from this: Timing belt section says to check ‘Note 2' and ‘ Note 2' seems to suggest at every 60,000kms, ‘I’ and at every 90,000kms, ‘R’....

Now, the Legend at the top of the page says ‘I’ stands for ‘Inspect’ and ‘R’ stands for ‘Replace’, so, unless I am misreading it, it’s INSPECT the belt every 60k kms and REPLACE every 90k kms. My last belt change was done at 96,000kms so I should be good for another 10k kms, thankfully! :D

Original Post below:

....I was just checking to see when my next oil change is due (500kms)....and found out I am 20,000kms overdue on a timing belt change 0_o

Car is at 174,500kms and last time it was changed was 96,000kms, recommended interval after the first change is 60,000kms.

Chances poor Humdrum’s engine is going to explode in the next week until I get an appointment?

Interference engine?

If no, then drive until it breaks.

I better check on my own car since I'm pretty sure the owner didn't do the 100,000 mile service only to get it repo'd 2,000 miles later.

What ive read after owning a couple elantras is, inspect every 30,000 (miles) replace every 60,000(miles).  Either way you should be fine

Oops...

Hopefully the chance is low? Maybe your low heat environment minimizes wear.

Though 60,000km interval seems really low. The interval on my Volvo is 120,000 miles (some are 150,000), and even VW’ s 60,000 miles  is 50% more than what you are talking about .

As long as it doesn’t break, no harm will be done.

And if it’s a non-interference engine, even if it does break, harm probably won’t be done.

What is the year, make and model of the vehicle we are discussing?

I had downloaded a Word doc somebody had supposedly done up for my car once that said 96k kms for the first one and then 60k kms after that, but that did seem a bit low to me, so I’m going to look it up again....maybe ask the local Hyundai dealership for sure....

That could end poorly :P

Can’t really afford a full engine replacement, so better safe than sorry....going to double-check that it is due now and book an appointment if it is!!!

It wouldnt make sense  for the replaced timing belt to suddenly be less reliable then the original

Interference, yes.

Yeah, best to get it done....$1000 is a lot, but it’s a lot cheaper than $3000 for a new engine replacement...

Even CAD that’s a lot for a belt and labor. Maybe I’m just a noob but does that seem like more than you would expect? It’s not engine out is it?

Just looked it up and mine isn't interference which is good, but tows are expensive. Might want to look into that. History is mostly unknown.

OK, I was going by memory, mostly...just went out and got the User Manual...

Kinja'd!!!

Timing Belt says to refer to Note 2

N ow that I look at it (I was going by memory), Note 2 says ‘Inspect’ every 60,000kms and ‘replace’ every 90,000kms...is that what you take from it as well?

(The ‘Legend’ for what ‘I’ and ‘R’ mean is along the top)

50k miles between timing belts is not too bad . My wife’s old Acord she got before we were married had nearly 100k miles (so 160k km) before it’s first new timing belt... oopsie...

I seem to remember that it IS an interference engine.

I just looked in the User Manual:

It says to see ‘Note 2' for the Timing Belt....

‘Note 2' seems to say ‘Inspect’ at 60k kms and ‘Replace’ at 90k kms....or so the Legend along the top seems to indicate for what ‘I’ and ‘R’ stand for....is that what you take from it as well?

Sorry if I sound like an idiot, just trying to be more safe than sorry :P

90k kms would make sense for replace though, considering the FIRST built change was at 96,000kms...

$1000-$1500 is pretty par for the course for timing belt changes on most cars, sadly. It’s not engine-out on my car, no. It’s about the price I would expect, roughly.

Mine is interference, so that would mean major engine damage if the belt did snap... :(

It actually seems the belt needs to be INSPECTED at 60K intervals and CHANGED at 90K intervals...if that’s the case, then I’m still good on getting it changed for another 10K kms :)

Pulled the manual out of the glovebox and it has this (as I’d been going by memory) :

Kinja'd!!!

Timing belt section says to check ‘ Note 2' and it seems to suggest every 60,000kms, ‘I’ and every 90,000kms ‘R’, according to Note 2....

The Legend at the top of the page says ‘I’ stands for ‘Inspect’ and ‘R’ stands for ‘Replace’, so, unless I am misreading it, I’d have 90,000kms from the last time it was replaced (which was 96,000kms) until I have to change it again.....which would be 186,000kms, and Humdrum is at 175,000kms, so I think I’m good! :D

Yup... according to this list:

http://yourcarangel.com/2014/07/interference-engines-complete-list/

everything Hyundai makes is an interference design.

Also double checked it with this guide:

https://assets.gates.com/content/dam/gates/home/resources/resource-library/catalogs/timingbeltreplacementguide.pdf

Though Hyundai DID have one model/engine that was non-interference... the 2nd and 3rd gen Hyundai Sonata with the 3L V6 from Mitsubishi.

So on that basis, get that timing belt replaced ASAP.

It certainly makes your bank account happy.

My car may still be on its original timing belt but non interference so I'm not too worried. 121,700 miles is a lot though so I might want to get it looked at.

I just updated my post, seems it’s INSPECT every 60K kms and REPLACE every 90K kms, so I would actually have another 11,000kms to go before I have to get it replaced, based on when my last one was done (95,000kms) :)

Yeah, even if non-interference, still a pain if you’re suddenly out a car for a day or two until the garage can sort it out / the cost of paying for a tow...

I have CAA, luckily, so I get 8 free tows/calls to a tow truck a year, though I’ve never had to use any for actual tows....did use them twice for flat tires though...luckily both in my own driveway and I wasn’t in a rush to get anywhere, haha!

Yeah, come to think of it, in that second link I provided, the interval is in miles... so you change it ever 60,000 miles (it’s a US publication) ... which is around 97,000km.

There are plenty of non-interference motors... like the Ford CVH engine found in the Escort and Focus.

Or the lower performance versions of the Mitsubishi SOHC 3L V6 or the V6/hybrid in some Toyota/ Lexus vehicles.

Not bad. Come to think of it, I have something like that as well but I just forgot. I don’t recall the overall cost.

That one time my car got towed for being illegally parked it was like $300 or more to get it released. And that’s Ameribucks, bucko. Puts it into perspective that 8 tows is a pretty amazing deal, at least compared to the extortionist  prices of being on the wrong end of the law.

Y eah, I looked into it more and I’m actually fine...I’m not yet up to the time interval since the last change (i.e. 72 months yet. I last had it done in 2015 (I forget what month), but even 72 months from January 2015 would be this coming January 2021, so I’m still good there. As for kms, it’s replace every 90,000kms (inspect at 60k kms) and I’m at 175,000kms with it having been replaced at 95,10 0kms last time, so I should still have about 10k kms left :)

8 tows in a year would be unfortunate. I don’t think even Sony’s old Mini Clubman JCW was towed that many times in a year.
