Kinja'd!!!

So I got a computer for school about a year ago and wanted a car wallpaper. All the top results are edgy supercars and super powered muscle cars and that’s not exactly my speed. I threw in the keywords “old” and “rusty” and stumbled upon this one, which I still have. Only thing: I have no clue what the car is.

You’re all smart. Lend me a hand here will ya?

Fiat 124 based Lada Riva or its VAZ siblings. Same platform as the Lada Niva. Very popular to this day in the former Soviet Bloc.

That looks a Lada like a knockoff Fiat.

I came up with the VAZ 2101 but it depends on what country it was sold in and when. Lots of names for that thing but I suspect it wasn't export market.

Not a knock off but a license built version.

“T he car was a heavily modified and licence-built version of the Fiat 124 tailored for the Soviet Union and much of the Eastern Bloc. ”

Wow that was fast. The merest mention of a Soviet Bloc car is like shark bait around here.

It’s what used to be a Fiat 124 before it became a Lada. N ever a quick car though.

That depends on your definition of quick though.

2101 would be the actual model number. I believe it was called the Riva in most Western export markets, and the Zhiguli name was used later on domestically in the Soviet Union and Russia for variants of this car.

The first and second digits, 21, denote a small passenger car, the third and fourth digits, 01, would have been chosen by the factory to designate the specific design type.

Yes, and the Soviets supplied discount priced sheet steel to Fiat as part of the royalty payments.

I’m not the least bit surprised that the hive mind ID’d this so quickly , but I am surprised that none of the 60+ results tineye turned up had any info about what it is.

Zhiguli is just the Russian nickname for them....in Russia they were a VAZ 2100 series (different variations on that nu mber for the station wagon version, etc)

I think in export markets they were labelled as like...the 1200 or something.

Wasn’t the Riva the name for the later model 2105?

I don’t think the ‘Zhiguli’ was ever called a Riva that I can recall!

Kinja'd!!! ranwhenparked > RallyDarkstrike - Fan of 2-cyl FIATs, Eastern Bloc & Kei cars

Kinja'd!!!0

The Riva was the 2105, 2107, and 2104, the Zhiguli name was used, either officially, or colloquially, for the 2101, 2102, 2103, 2104, 2105, 2106, and  2107, so there was some overlap.
