On Friday, I spent 9.5 hours straight walking in order to finish the final section of the 63 mile long Backbone Trail in the Santa Monica Mountains. One could say that I am now tired from that. Between the 22.6 miles of actual trail plus another mile to the parking lot and another mile after that to get down the road to catch an Uber back to the car, it was a long ass day. At mile 18, I ran out of water unexpectedly even though I had refilled my 3L pack at mile 10. But thankfully I was well hydrated enough and still had a reserve 0.25L of gatorade left. Anyways, here are some photos from the day:

Like I said, a short easy hike right?

Kinja'd!!!

Many sections early on of dense, almost jungle-like areas. So abnormal for Socal hiking!

Kinja'd!!!

Everything still clouded over at 0800, about an hour into the trail

Kinja'd!!!

Headed toward the ridge as the sun peaked out

Finally made it up high!

Above the clouds!

Such variety on this trail!

Finally found the ocean at the end!

Kinja'd!!!

Lots of horses , huge old trees, and expansive lawns in the park at the end

I will have to put together some thoughts on the entire 63 mile long trail. It was quite the experience and now I definitely want to do it again, but quicker. It took me 5 days doing it in sections but there is no reason that it couldnt be done in 3 without much more trouble. Would just need to do logistics to get back to the car each day. The sheer variety of environments on this trail is astounding and my photos simply do not do it justice.

That's some nice trail walking there...

Could you not camp along the way or is this not the done thing?

Well theres a 40 mile section where theres no legal camping. So its not an ideal thru hike. I was reading some reports of people who have done it but they camped illegally in odd spots. Theres also almost no water along the way, especially outside of springtime. I think the intent of whoever built the trail is to eventually implement thru hiking support. But it was only just completed end to end  in last few years so its rather new as far as trails go.
