New job (well... ok... I’ve been there for 5 months) required me to get a certification. It was a “one week” course that I’ve drug out for 2 months followed by a 3 hour “in person” exam. Thanks to COVID, the course was online and the test was proctored remotely using EXCEPTIONALLY creepy software .

But I passed surprisingly handily. Minimum passing score was a 70% and I got a 92% so... wow. I would have thought it was going to be a lot closer. I got a 75% and an 85% on the practice exams, but felt like I was doing a lot worse on the real exam.

Here are our cars from our last socially distant offroading “excursion” (where excursion means offroad to a place and have a beer soda)

Speaking of beer soda, I think I’ve earned one...

I also found the proctoring software exceptionally creepy and invasive.

The last exam I took was the private pilot exam. The proctor was watching via camera from the next room. There was a software glitch at the end that kept it from reporting properly, so the proctor came in to “help” me get it submitted. She screwed up the recovery process before contacting support and the exam was essentially lost in the system. I had two choices: either wait for the testing center to send the hard drive to the software developers to see if they could recover the results; or take the test again.

I sat back down and took the test again.

I just about lost my shit when they were like “ok now we’re going to take over your computer and download and run some scripts!” I’M SORRY WHAT?

If I’d known I would have just grabbed a spare laptop, done the test, and then nuked that windows install when I was done.

Wait, what?!? You didn’t go to a testing center and use some funkified ancient Windows XP box that’s been sitting there for 10 years?

There is some irony that this was a computer security certification....

Or loaded it onto a VM within your laptop.

Yeah, I went to a test in g center for my last certification to avoid that shit. I’m pretty sure if I did it remotely I’d just do an OS install on an old hard drive specifically for the test.

Thought about it but they explicitly forbade VMs.
