I did not think you could rent a car and drive it from coast to coast. I thought they had some kind of deal at the Mississippi River or the Continental divide or some place that you couldn't drive across.

It’s allowed if the rental agency doesn’t learn of the act.

The rental agencies are bankrupt, they cannot afford to track cars.

I think many firms will let you one-way to just about anywhere - but you’ll pay for it.

Some contracts are in-state or local only. My contracts for the two-year stint in Houston were all unlimited miles. I drove the rentals until they needed an oil change or something went wrong. I took a couple of them down to have the oil changed so I could keep them longer.
My favorite “local” rental was a U-Haul trailer. I had to pick up some furniture from my in-laws, but a one-way trailer from south Texas to Louisiana was going to be $500. I rented one locally on a Friday , pulled it to south Texas on Saturday , loaded it with furniture that night, got up early on Sunday to drive home, unload it and drop it off. Officially, it was a two-day rental for $70 plus tax.

And he only left a few small holes in the car that only the rental car place would notice. I’m betting even they wouldn’t have noticed if he hadn’t said anything. Now they’re going to go over the car with a fine-toothed comb and charge him for everything they find.

“we recommend the insurance, and also the insurance doesnt protect you if you break any of our rules written in size 5 font on this 16 page document, I’ll give you 5 seconds to read it and decide”
“oh no! you took it across this random Mississippi line we arbitrarily decided on! your contract is null and void”

and the rental agency wont care until after the act. their motivation isnt to stop you, it’s to allow you to mess up and then charge you 3 times the value of the car directly to the credit card on file

I did that once. Unfortunately, there was a blizzard I didn’t account for. Jack-knifing an empty U-Haul trailer behind a small
RWD SUV
is no fun at all.
