I knew NASCAR was backwards, but are the tracks so old that they don’t have garage door openers?

It's probably less about the association and more about the track owner being cheap. But I have no idea really.

If they’re gonna say it was a garage door pull, they should release pictures of it. A slipping knot makes zero sense for a pull.

All electric garage doors have a rope attached in case the electricity is out/not working.  You need to be able to close the door still and pulling it down with a rope is pretty standard.

One of the NASCAR journalists found this photo he took last year and put it up on twitter again once they said it wasn’t a new item . If it’s what they were referring to I can definitely see why folks were concerned (left side of pic).

The video evidence shows the loop was there last year. Either someone got bored and tied a noose in a bad attempt to be funny or it was another knot that looks a lot like a noose but isn’t.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s really hard to tell from the video what the loop actually is. I’m not sure it’s beneficial to confirm it either way simply because it wasn’t aimed at Wallace as everyone previously thought.

Worked at a Nascar track built in 2001, all 120 garage bays were manual release. Isn’t really an issue during race weekend, teams open the door at 7am and close it when they’re finished for the day, not like it opens and closes often. Plus that’s a lot of expense and maintenance for something used maybe eight times a year.

That’s an emergency pull that is attached to the mechanism of a consumer electric opener.

Commercial doors will have battery backups, or chain-pulls that are part of the standard mechanism.

The Talladega garage doors appear to have neither. They have door pulls because the manual doors are too high to reach.

First NASCAR starts telling teams how they can and can’t close their garage doors, and the next thing you know they’ll be putting restrictions on things fans can and can’t do with their sisters / cousins. It’s bull crap!

Understood, but they did a $50 million dollar renovation a few years ago at Talladega.

I’m sure they put some new doors somewhere ....they aren’t that hard to install or maintain. I installed two of them 20 years ago in my own house.

Yeah, it’s good that it wasn’t a recent thing aimed at him, but it’s still pretty much a noose so I understand why someone was concerned (from what I read, Bubba never saw it and wasn’t the one that reported it).

Regardless, I want to know how a famous NASCAR track does a $50 milllion renovation and they still have ropes to pull down garage doors.

Meh. It’s a big investment with money probably better spent elsewhere. Really, what does the owner of the facility care if someone from the team has to open and close the garage door. All they see is an added expense that doesn’t enhance revenue or the fan experience.

I didn’t know there was a video out. Huh. This is all pretty stupid. It looks pretty noose-ish in smobgirl’s comment, but if it’s been there for a year or more it can’t really be linked closely to Bubba’s BLM livery or other ongoing events.

There are always ropes, even if the door is electrically operated. The ropes are there so they can pull the door down when the power is out.

Are you saying those doors have electric openers? And those ropes on the side are just for emergencies? From all the pics I’ve seen, those doors are manual.

Consumer/home doors have the emergency rope pulls on the electric chain/belt mechanism. These are mounted high and in the middle, with a red plastic handle.

Commercial doors usually have chain guides (manual, or elec tric that can also be manually operated if needed) or battery backup systems.

I’m not saying Talladega would have F1-level garages, and they don’t even need to be electric, but jeez install some real door openers.

I mean, it’ s clearly a noose, though I think the point is that it wasn’t out of malice.  Based on my experience in shops I would guess some young member of the team just did it while bored and thought about it the same way they would drawing knifes or skulls on a notebook...i.e. not at all.

I’m saying that there are other ways to open and close garage doors in case the electrics fail.

I did some more digging and found a few pictures that provide more insight. These are manually opened doors.

Any comparison of a 1,000 acre facility to a persons’ home is apples-to-oranges, you can’t compare the two in the slightest. Sure you can justify buying a $200 garage opener when it’s used daily, it’s a lot harder to justify $24,000 on garage door openers that are used to open and close a door maybe eight times per year.

Point taken. I just think they could have a cleaner solution instead of ropes hanging from the doors after a $50 million dollar renovation, and revenue of $190 million on just one of those eight weekends (2015 numbers)

https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingham/news/2015/10/27/talladega-race-weekend-sees-biggest-economic.html

It looks like there are different sections of garages, some look much nicer. Might be an overflow area, but I still think it could be better for a NASCAR race venue.

Post specifically stated electric openers, as most of the doors look OK except for a few pics I’ve seen, but those may be from before the renovations. My actual issue was with random ropes swinging around, waiting for some dopey spectator to just pull one down, or to get stuck on a rolling tool chest or something.

You actually did change my agenda, as I realize now that it’s not a facility that really gets used for racing outside of NASCAR . I was just expecting something like manual chain openers, a bit more commercial/professional looking.  I am definitely in the minority.

Thanks!
