The engine hasn’t worked properly for a single mile of the 27,000 I put on it. Over the past 1.5 years its spent at least 6 months completely undrivable.(there could be a whole post detailing its most recent engine problems)
Ive had it, its become a psychological drain as much as a financial burden recently and with the loan getting close I pulled the trigger on some heavier debt.
6 speed, 2016 Scion IM with 60k.
The numbers hurt: Minis trade in value was $1800, 4k was left on the loan. Putting 2k down basically just means I paid $2k to get rid of it. When the dust settled with taxes and such the scion was 13k financed for 4 years 3% interest.
This car is supposed to be transportation that I can rely on for the next few years thats safe, slow, and not a cop magnet

Sucks about the Mini, but hopefully the new ride will be more reliable.

more reliable..

Make sure you check the vin regularly, should be interesting. Or, forget about it and enjoy the reliable and fun Toyota. Looks like a great car.

Sorry about the mini, I’ve been there before too. Looking forward to your thoughts on the scion though , I’ve been considering one too.

The Corolla hatch that we all want targeted at an audience that didn't buy them. This is a good decision. Sorry the Mini let you down then let you down some more then some more then some more. The 'yota will just be fun in a different and more responsible way.

Itll go to a scrapyard since it needs an engine rebuild, unless someone gets unlucky enough to think its a simple fix

Probably for the best unfortunately. W hen you have your Locost up and running, they’ll compliment each other. The ‘rolla will be slow, safe, reliable, sensible, and overall good at being a car, while the Locost will be none of that nonsense.

Sorry to hear about the Mini....the Scion iM/Corolla hatch is a good car. :)
$13K is a lot though, was there nothing a little cheaper on your wallet that would’ve been just as reliable / cheap to run? Some semi-recent Hyundai-Kia stuff would’ve worked well as ‘basic transport’...my Accent’s given me pretty much NO mechanical problems in the 120,000kms I’ve owned it since I bought it at 54,000kms. The only part I’ve replaced that wasn’t a maintenance item was a starter and that was only caused by salty winter roads rusting through the thick cable on the starter that runs between the solenoid and the motor...
$13K just seems like a lot when you were already in debt :(

Your Accent only has **does math** 115,000 miles on it? I guess I just live in a place where long bouts of highway driving are unavoidable. I think my idea of what constitutes high miles is skewed.

Well I went from 4k in debt, paying off a boat anchor to 13k in debt with a functional car.
The list price was 10.5 before taxes and fees got tacked on(the most affordable IM in a 200 mile radius) . A cheaper Hyundai elantra was in the running but the corolla was newer and looked better.
Arrivederci

Literally zero chance. Congrats on the new ride - it’ll serve you well for far more than the four years you have it financed for, and then it can remain a reliable daily if you want to get into something fun again.

That’s kinda how I ended up with my first new car. The previous car was unable to get to a reliable place without constant worry of major things breaking on a weekly basis.

This sounds a lot like my Galant VR-4 ownership.
Welcome to reliable car ownership.
There’s light at the end of the debt tunnel, I just paid of the e90 last week. Took me 28 months, when I bought it my goal was to pay it off in two years, so I’ll call it close enough.

Weirdly, that is mostly highway miles on my car. It had 54,000kms on it when I bought it used from the local Mazda dealership. Sadly 170K kms is starting to ‘get on in years’ up here as most cars don’t last TOO much past 220-250K kms as they start to succumb to rust from the climate and salty winter roads
:(

True...how long do you think it’ll take to pay it off? I’m just glad you have something reliable and working again! Can always do some little tweaks to the iM here and there as well to make it your own :)

I am quite fortunate to live in a climate where road salt is unnecessary. My dad;s truck is 8,000 miles away from the big 300,000 and it doesn’t have any corrosion other than one area of surface rust where the paint flaked off. The 02 Tundra was susceptible to such catastrophic frame rust that some had to get their entire chassis replaced in colder climates.
It’s just sort of strange to think about structural issues claiming a car before the engine or transmission goes out. You’ve been very proactive on keeping the rust from spreading so I wish Humdrum many more happy miles.
250,000 kilometers is about 155,000 miles, which seems like an awfully short lifespan for a vehicle. My own car is only at 120,000 and the only real obstacle to getting it to 220,000 is a transmission with a bad reputation. My mom’s “unreliable” Volvo has managed to go 220,000 ish and about 180,000 on the original engine. Commutes are also brutal around here though with the tremendous urban sprawl.

That’s what claimed my old Subie...the body had a little, but not too much rust in places, but the rear subframe had rusted out and cracked. I could’ve had it replaced, but it had 180,000kms on it at the time and the cost to get a shop to replace the rear subframe (AWD car, remember, so think of all the things that would need to be removed and reinstalled just to get the subframe out and back in...) was more than the car was worth and I didn’t (and still don’t!) have the place or equipment to do it myself.
Some Subie enthusiasts from the local motorsport club ended up buying ‘Beastie’ (as I called her) from me as they had an EXACT SAME Subie that, if memory serves, had a dead engine and much rustier body than mine...but a perfectly fine rear subframe. They also had a very well-equipped garage of their own, so they swapped the good subframe from their car onto my car, put some lower WRX springs on it
and drove it for a few more years, even autocrossing it some...they send me pics of them autocrossing her at one point, so at least I know she went out with a bang before she was eventually scrapped :)
These are the pics they sent me of autocrossing her at the Atlantic Motorsport Park
:
Can you send some of that more car-friendly climate up this way...?

I’ll get an aerosol can and start spraying away the ozone layer. You’re welcome.
What a lovely color for a Subie! Glad such a wonderful machine could be saved from the scrap heap, even if just for a few more years.

The color on ‘Beastie’ was Savannah Green Metallic....lovely shade! It really popped in the sun too...

I love colors that have that pop when at the right angle. I don't see much metal flake though so was it just the right brightness?

It’s there, it was just hard to see at certain angles...I also think they were VERY small flakes, so it gave off like....more of a glow than a sparkle, if that make sense...

More to do with weird engine mapping, starting from a stop the car seems to try and,"help" by bringing the rpm up to 2k while you are busy modulating the clutch and throttle. Pedal placement makes heel toe impossible, and the throttle lag is so great that rev matching is almost pointless

Its being designed to fit twin turbo’d but if the engine blows too soon it could end up na for reliability since itd still be ridiculously quick.
That projects on hold while the 280z work goes on

Honestly even 250 hp would be borderline unusable in a Locost. It’ll be like 1500lbs at most when done.
