i sorta kinda fainted......lol

Kinja'd!!!

something supercharged me hayfever this morning so i already had some trouble breathing...deciding to then go work on our non airconditioned shopfloor wich is a goddamn heattrap and was already at around 30c when we started was maybe not a very smart plan.....

anyhoo....i should maybe go see a doctor if that happens again (kind of a pain in the arse getting an appointment atmo)

You didn’t hurt yourself on the way down, did you? A friend of mine wasn’t feeling well, so he stepped into a restroom to splash some water on his face. He passed out while standing at the sink and the sink left a nasty gash on his forehead on the way down to the floor. The girl working with him at the time heard the crash and decided to check on him. She found him lying in a pool of blood and thought he’d managed to kill himself. It didn’t take too many stitches to fix him up, but I’d guess the poor girl needed therapy for PTSD.

Passing out from dehydration when I had the flu in March was quite the experience. I can definitely sympathize.

Hope you feel better soon.

That’s great! It could ha ve been much worse!

If your coworkers are anything like mine were when I worked at the plant, you’ll never hear the end of this. Let me get you started....

I heard that Farscythe is looking for a new pet.

Get some rest! And yeah, randomly fainting isn’t normal, you shouldn’t feel bad about going to the hospital to get checked out if you can’t get an appointment.

Kinja'd!!! farscythe - makin da cawfee! > facw

Kinja'd!!!0

well...it wasnt exactly randomly....it was more me ignoring my trouble breathing and getting increasingly hot whilst trying to keep working till i got lightheaded enough to go down...

i probably should have just told me team lead i need fresh air

Be more careful! You (hopefully and probably) won't get fired or berated for taking a minute or two outside to help clear your head. Sounds like that warehouse must have been built out of old ovens.

old 60s factory of the build it quick and put the windows in the goddamn roof design.....not a great design when its sunny (wich admittedly used to be rarer here)

the welders and cnc mills and shit dont help keeping the place cool either

Still could be worth getting checked out. You could have been seriously injured if you fell in the wrong place.

Good news is that if you tell your boss you need to get some air in the future they are much more likely to think it’s true rather than thinking that you are just slacking off.

Oof, sounds like a sweaty grimy pit of discomfort.

I once played a game of basketball with my team in a building called the hotbox. No air conditioning isn't too bad but it wasn't even ventilated in the slightest. People were always falling over because sweat was just streaming off you into the floor at all times. What a miserable place. Oh, and the court and goals were as janky as could be.

ill see what happens tomorow morning...but probably should get checked out anyway... hayfever seems to be getting much worse these last couple years

I hear you. Our plant and warehouse were open to the elements and didn’t have insulation. With all the buildings made of steel, we would just bake in the Texas summer heat.

T he worst was when we had to fill 55-gallon drums with product. To get it to flow, the product (nonylphenols) had to be heated to 450°F. To protect us from the chemicals, we had to wear a full slicker suit, rubber gloves, respirator, and face shield. The barrels were filled by a machine, but had to be moved by hand down the conveyor. I’ve never been hotter in my life. It was like being in an oven. At least they supplied us with all the ice-cold gatorade and water we could drink.

After many complaints and a few near fainting episodes, they bought us a cooling vest. The vest was worn under the slicker suit and it had a reservoir which held cold water. A battery-powered pump would circulate the water through tubes all over the vest. The first time we tried it, we threw in a few handfuls of ice just to be sure that we could get cool enough.

That was a mistake.

Everyone was already sweaty from being in the plant. The first guy to put on the vest was no exception. He threw it on, donned his slicker suit, then stepped up to the drumming machine. Despite the building being over 100° and the heat pouring off the filled drums, it wasn’t long before the poor guy was shivering and his lips were turning blue. We normally filled 50 to 100 drums before swapping operators (one guy to keep the drum racks filled with empty drums; one guy to fill, cap, and move the drums; one guy to clear the filled drums from the line with a forklift). This guy was ready to swap after maybe 20 drums.

We learned that ice water in the vest was a bad idea. Few operators would use the vest after trying it once, even with just tap water. It was just too efficient at cooling us down. Wearing it was like stepping from an oven into a walk-in freezer. We just learned to deal with the heat by drinking plenty of water.

lol yeah...the hotbox kinda sounds like my shopfloor....only ventilation is pretty much the loading dock doors

should be getting some bigly fans in a week or two...wich is to say...after this heatwave...

pretty sure management waited for a heatwave to be absolutely definitely confirmed before trying to rent the fans again

Rent? You gotta have at least one on hand at all times, even if just to blow air from a nearby door to the managers’ offices.

The hotbox had all the doors propped open, a few small portable fans, and a small hole in the wall to get the faintest amount of breeze in the heavy hot still air. The other part of the building, ironically, seemed to be an indoor junkyard for air conditioning units. Never have I seen such a fire hazard. Units stacked to the ceiling and greasy parts all over the floor.

ah well... funnily enough... management lives upstairs in the fancy part of the building that recieves guests and shareholders...they have climate control

we just have heaters for winter and water dispensers for summer lol

You should get some fainting couches hehe.

Kinja'd!!!

Stay safe man. Can’t the unions get you proper air flow? Or maybe regular water breaks?

fainting couch sounds good

we have water breaks whenever we want possibly thanks to the unions..i dont know

airflow seems to be one of those things thats forever on hold.....tho...it doesnt help theres a few coworkers who will imediately complain about it being too cold soon as a fan gets placed....they work sitting

Hmmm that is an issue I suppose. Though you can wear a coat sitting down and some people are just always cold. I think passing out from heat is more important. At the very least keep up your water intake. Stay safe.

monitoring automation?....as in making sure the robot doesnt go off the rails?

i mean...i kinda used to enjoy doing that....but thats mostly coz betsy the wondercow ancient welding bot was constantly finding new and wonderfull ways to break

There’s no robot it’s all software automation. Some of it is called a bot but it’s all software.

I imagine there’s a lot of crossover between monitoring robotic automation and monitoring software automation. I do end up doing a lot of the trouble shooting before I pass off issues to the devs.

Kinja'd!!! farscythe - makin da cawfee! > CalzoneGolem
06/23/2020 at 11:19

Kinja'd!!!1

there is crossover... but im mostly not allowed to touch the software

i pretty much just had to keep an eye on the screen to make sure everything stayed at temps it should be...and keep an eye and ear out for anything wierd...like knocks or waterleaks or welds not being where they are supposed to be

wich...in betsys case was a fulltime job

but yeah anything i couldnt sort out with a wrench i had to call tech support for
