Installed a ceiling access ladder. Wasn’t too bad except that I’m really picky when it comes to things like squareness. Here’s the potato pics!

Just hafta reroute a couple of light’s wiring and then back to insulating and closing it up.

How is the ceiling ladder insulated?

Good work! Those can be tricky to get exactly square and even trickier to not leave any unsightly gaps.

It’s not really... I made the framing tight and square on 3 of 4 sides (no shims) and only have a shimming gap on the last side. I’ll spray foam that.

The lid has a small lip but I could see airflow going through that in the winter. I made the ladder-frame with it’s “lid” flush to the joists. I plan on adding an OSB “lid” on top of that with a larger lip to the framing and will put some compression foam around that to get a better seal.

Above it I’ll use some vapour barrier and small 1x1's with pin-nails to make a weighted tarp- like cover to seal it up a little better. it won’t be perfect, but it’ll be at least as draf t proof as my houses attic hatch. If I wanna get really crazy in the future (as in ices up or something)  I’ll cut foam blocks to fit into and around the folded ladder to bump up the R-value.

You can always get a piece of insulation to drape over the ladder in the winter before you close it up. It’s not a big deal. The weatherstrip will be the best defense. My parents house had ladders in the two attics, the one in the house would get drafty in the winter, but we just made sure to get it closed tightly and it wasn’t very noticeable.

That’s some good storage space up there

Nicely done.

That’s a good idea. I thought it’d be a great place to store things like outdoor decorations for Halloween and Christmas. Get them out of my wife’s garden shed.

I hate to suggest it but you could of done better with an aluminum ceiling ladder. I had a wood one for years and every time I carried something I swore it was my last time as I thought this is the time it will break.

I ended up replacing the ladder only with the same brand one but aluminum. E very time I use it, I think of the less risk I am taking.....
