Mostly complete with my electric choke conversion. Repost for the daylight crowd
Why you ask? Well, because my hot air choke is prohibitively difficult to replace. Why a vacuum system was easier than a few wires (or hell, a single dedicated wire from the distributor like later cars) is beyond me.
Besides previously blocking the vaccuum port in the choke housing, I am doing a proper install by running a relay. The relay is powered only when the engine is running (by tapping into the output for the voltmeter), and the choke has a direct fused power source. Nothing is significantly impacted by wiring butchery, and my choke will not suffer from any “heat soak” issues from leaving the ignition on.
Mostly done, but I still need to cut into the alternator wire to tee it off. Unfortunately radioshack doesnt exist any more and any fancy connectors are a no-go.

There’s a splicy that you can get at the auto parts house. It cuts thru the insulation anywhere alone a wire and lets you splice the end of a wire into it. Kind of a double barreled plastic thing with a flap and an aluminum ‘M’ athwart . Tried to find it at both auto zone and napa and lowes online but , sheesh, terrible sites to search ! All of them have them in stock but I don’t know what to call’em. And, I assume yer not going to run >20amps thru this? These splices might not handle that well but 5 or so would be ok.

luckily the only splice is for the relay. The relay should draw hardly any current at all and then it goes straight to ground. I’ll take a look and see what they have.

Those things are the work of Our Lord and Saviour, the Prince of Darkness , the mighty Lord Lucas. It will work at first but then through trickery, corrosion and downright stupid design...it will fail. And darkness will fall.
Unless you appreciate the finer points of English or Italian auto electronics...as in always wondering why such and such doodad doesn’t work...don't use a scotch lock.

Pretty cool. When my old TA’s carburetion went TU, I bought one of these, but never got around to installation. Think its in my junk pile around here somewhere. An electric would have been a better solution.

They’re called Scotchlok connectors - or at least 3M’s take on them are.

Look for telecoms grade ones. They h ave a built- in sachet of g oop that gets pierced when you make the connection, then flows round the joint and sets, sealing it. They’re designed for splicing underground phone lines. Work really well in wet environments. Though I don’t know if a high current version exists.

I’ve used them before...but not in a 10 amp DC circuit. Honestly, I've learned through hard won experience that it’s just as easy to do a proper splice and sleeve it in adhesive lined heat shrink...and never have to touch it again.

Probably less hassle in installation, although I haven’t been happy with online tutorials.

Every one i've ever used requires me to feather the choke for like 2-3 mins

I have to do that until I burn out the old gas. There needs to be a 3/4 choke. Half is okay. Rev’s a bit more at 3/4 then dies at full.
Time for an EGO.
