This is why I am killing myself to be able to move here in a few years. And this slug was enormous. People have been very chill so far, which is the opposite of California.

Where is this? Is all of Orego n insanely expensive? Or is it possible to live somewhere rural while having a decent paying job and living comfortably?

My aunt used to own oceanfront
land in Nesquin. Unfortunately, it was pretty damn rainy and cold.

What’s bringing you out this way? Looks beautiful out there. Been so long since we went out to the coast, forget how gorgeous, serene, and uncrowded it is compared to Portland.

Blue skies in the morning on the Oregon coast? Weird.
Seriously though, I love it down there.

I live in Oregon (Portland). Depends on what you’re comparing against, industry you’re in, etc. But typically all the “well paying” jobs are in the cities (although places like Salem, Eugene, Corvallis are much smaller and more affordable than Portland). And even in the Portland area some folks do live outside the city and commute in (my boss and quite a few folks at his level in my company have a similar commute to mine, just in a different direction, and have property with farms/pastures/grape vines etc. ).
A lot of rural Oregon is absolutely gorgeous but also very poor, so a comfortable life would depend on your skill set and what your priorities are.

We honeymooned in a cabin just south of Yachats, about 2 hours north of where you are right now. We spent a day at the Oregon Dunes, about an hour north of you. If you like dune buggies, there are several places that rent them. Toby might not enjoy the ride, but I’m sure you would.

My SIL lives in eastern Oregon and it is very cheap.

East side of Portland is cheaper than the west side (I live on the west side) , mainly because the west side has the Intel and Nike headquarters, plus Washington county, as well as Multnomah, have high taxes on everything. Once your out of the main metro area its a pretty big drop.

And here I was planning on leaving Louisville for Fairbanks. Might have to rethink that.... any good mechanic jobs in Oregon?

Lived just outside Portland for five years, I prefer northwest Washington for many reasons.

Right. I live in SW Portland and might work for the company you noted that doesn’t sell shoes. Have tons of coworkers who live out in the Wilsonville/ Newberg area who just take backroads to work and get there in the same time as I do, but have way cheaper prices so they have huge properties they like to play gentleman farmer with.

I prefer the term “Californicators”.
They also move here, and bitch and moan about some things being better “in Cali”, while lamenting having some similar problems to “Cali”. Not realizing the common denominator.

I pretty firmly believe that the west coast of the United States is the best strip of land on the entire planet.
That fact combined with “Oregon has fewer people than California” makes it pretty desirable.

“ The grass is always greener” thing also. But yeah when you say “everybody are assholes” everywhere you go, might need to look in a mirror lol.

Reminds me of someone who has been divorced 6 times who still doesn’t get it, and continues to complain about the gender of their partners.
CA invaders helped drive the PNW real estate market into insanity, no love lost for them from me.

Yeah I know quite a few that do that, but those backroads are now getting as clogged as taking the I5/84/217. I used to commute from Hillsboro to Tigard with those back roads.

I take 217 to TV highway usually - the traffic going the opposite direction always looks brutal. Would only imagine the backroads going in that direction are worse to a similar degree too . Maybe we’ll have a new normal that is slightly better with more people opting/able to WFH more often after this current situation comes to an end.

Its getting back to pretty heavy, talking to my parents who take Roy Rogers from Hillsboro to Sherwood and its pretty much back to where they were dealing with. As we get through the phases its going to get worse.

Moved to the Willamette valley(Eugene, junction city, Salem, Silverton, estacada) from Bellingham. I’ll stay here. But I AM glad I don’t live in PDX.

Nice area to call home. One of the things I don’t miss is the punitive Oregon income tax, I prefer a sales tax (user fee).

See, it bothered me at first. Now I hate it when I go to Washington and forget to add 10% at the checkout counter.
