The Mustang has had a rattle from the clutch for years, ever since my grandfather had his nephew (I guess my cousin? I don’t know, never met him) put a clutch in it. At first, we thought throwout bearing. Then, we thought it was actually the clutch cable.

Well, a few days ago I took it to go get food, and the clutch fork cover fell off. I didn’t notice it at the time, but today I did.

THE RATTLE IS GONE!

That’s right, my biggest annoyance with the car fixed itself. Clearly, it was loose, so when I put it back on I’ll have to make sure it doesn’t move around.

Gi ven domestic car luck, I’d be wary - one of your windows might fall out next.

Our family has never owned anything but domestics. The 4 toys are problematic from time to time but that’s because all 4 are between 30-50+ years old.

Funny enough I’ve replaced the passenger window motor in this thing twice since last summer.

I have a theory that USDM vehicles mform the 80s and 90s are always about 85% fixed. I had an old monte carlo that had a rough idle and stalling issues. But then after I fixed that, the passenger window refused to close correctly. I fixed that after about two years and then the transmission fell out of the car. My friends all have similar stories from our early car years. But it is a good bit of personality for all of them.

Pretty accurate, because now I’m smelling oil, it’s leaking coolant, and the temp sender is messed up.

But given how hard it’s been driven since my grandfather bought it used in ‘93 (it’s an ‘89), I’m not surprised.

This sounds 100 % accurate - you have to learn to live with minor things broken because you fix them something bigger breaks!

I had an 83 suburban an as soon as I fixed a whistling vent window the starter went out and when I fixed the starter the glow plug relay failed...

If that were my Fox body Mustang, the clutch cable would have immediately snapped, then, the replacement would have snapped and the power steering pump would have talked at the exact same time. Then the third replacement cable would have snapped, the replacement steering pump would have failed, the water pump would have spit out it’s seals, and the ECU would cause a strange hunting idle issue, and while fixing all of this the fuel pump would have failed.

I have owned 4 Fox body Mustangs. This is a small sampling of my experience. Yes, I still want another one.

Holy shit, that’s a lot of issues.

About the only one of those I’ve experienced is the idle surge, and pretty much all of them do that anyways.

I did have the fuel pump relay shit out on me a couple weeks ago though.

To be fair, I rarely buy nice, well kept examples of anything.

That’ll do it. My grandfather’s the second owner of this, and it’s literally like one mile from 94,000. so it’s probably better than most at this point.

The first one I owned was an ‘88 GT convertible that I bought from the second owner while I was in high school for $1,300. She bought it when it was 6 months old with a few thousand miles, and I bought it from her 12 years later with 428,000 miles.

That was a terrible decision.
