I guess removal is the easy/fun bit. Putting everything back.....that’s the shitty part.

Kinja'd!!!

I need to clean and prep the valve cover gasket. I didn’t think I would powder coat it ($ $) but, now that it is off? Yeah, for sure.

How I long for a day when my vehicular troubles include dirty valve covers.

Those lifters look a little gunky. Skip an oil change or two?

I appear to have received a defective part... I need to also clean the front of the engine and figure out where the oil leak is on my Datsun. Right now there is enough gunk to stop the leak, probably from the front cover.

Sounds like a good reason to not clean it!

I’m sure that’ll happen shortly too.

Any suggestion on how to clean them

You could try putting a bit of Sea Foam in your oil. Follow their instructions, run the truck lightly, and don’t leave it in very long.

No, I have nothing to add here and am far more ignorant than you on this subject. I'm sure Google knows.

You should disassemble and clean but if you don't want to the old school fix was kerosene in the oil idle to temp and then change the oil.

Switch to a synthetic for a few oil changes?

yeah Ive heard you don’t want to go too aggressive as the gunk can break off in chunks, vs gradual cleaning.

I’d just be concerned about the oil pickup getting gummed up. Other than that, shouldn’t be a big deal.  I’ve heard you can run atf through there too, or a dose of marvel mystery oil as well.

Due to it closed ATF has fewer detergents.

i’d be mostly worried about the change in viscosity. At every temp its 2/3 of 0-30.

I forgot about the amsoil flush. I used that many years ago when I made the switch to synthetic. I used amsoil for a few years when I was putting a bunch of miles on my Dakota so I could stretch out the time I had to crawl under there and change the oil. This was back before it was common practice to go over 5000 miles between changes.

That was back at 20,000 ish, maybe 30k, but seeing as I’ve now got over 178k on it, I’d say no I’ll effects. I switched over to Mobil 1 after a few years of running amsoil. Just because it was easier to source.

Anyway, back to the point, yeah that amsoil stuff would be a good option.
