[IP] Interior
[ ] Engine Swap (probably 1.8 upgrade ) & 1.8 A/C upgrade
[ ] Repaint, Freshen appearance
The suspension on the ol’ Miata still feels good about 14k miles after putting it on but the interior has always been too gross to even bother cleaning. The previous owner had a dog and I don’t think neither her not the dog ever once vacuumed the car. I reached for an electrical connector and got this instead.
It has also always rattled like a mofo. A couple weeks ago, I started massing components for the interior - including the parts to do a
center console delete, DIY some door cards, replace the carpets, and fix up the dash.
This is going to be good.
I started by doing all the things you do to pull the dash. It’s lot of nuts and bolts and electrical connectors, but it’s not impossible. I’ve been labeling everything as I go and putting the nuts and bolts into labeled medicine cups (with tape over the top). Invest in a label maker. You’ll love it. Also taking pictures of anything that shows orientation that I might screw up during reassembly.
But things took a turn when I started disassembling the dash itself. It was smashed. I counted at least 8 spots that needed repair.
Since I had to disass emble the entire dash, I also put some POR15 on the dash frame. Like all Miatas, even those in dry regions, the dash structure gets a little surface rust.
This is just from dash disassembly:
Bonus, I got a dipstick handle.

Looks like a challenge! I wonder if the dash issues are normal wear or if it was crunched in a wreck and never repaired.

I chuckle at the fact that the only time I’ve ever seen a miata with a non broken dipstick was that the owner had JUST replaced it. When I went to miatas at the gap I looked at at least like a dozen engine bays and probably saw one dipstick.
Curious how your engine swap goes, it's something I've gotta start watching tutorials on for my NB.

Definitely normal wear, unfortunately.

How does your shifter feel? If there’s any play at all, while you’ve got every
thing exposed, maybe you should
replace
the shifter bushing. It’s a cheap, easy repair, and on my ‘04 it made a huge difference. I
t shifted ever so much better afterwards.

My shifter in that car has been great. I did it about 10k miles ago. Strange though that in that time, the upper boot was absolutely thrashed - as in like... in 2 pieces. It will be super east to get to now though since I’m deleting the center console.

My advice: pull all the carpeting, clean it up thoroughly, and vacuum the bare floor. This is what I did when I replaced my rubber flooring in the CVPI.
