It’s 100% like a convertible, but without the sun’s misery.

Also, along with fixing the back window, I replaced the K&N intake with a stock one, and replaced almost all of the cooling system.

Notes.... If you have a K&N in your car, rip it off and throw it in the garbage. For the first time since I’ve owned it, it has midrange power. No longer do I have to floor it up a hill to maintain 50, it will go up at 3600 or so rpm, instead of 5000. Also, I’m 99% positive that the mechanic that did the gaskets put in a 190+ degree t-stat, because it runs a lot cooler now. Or maybe that’s just having a new radiator, thermostat, the right coolant, and fan clutch.

I think the 4Runner’s roll down window and tailgate is an awesome design. We used to roll the window down on ours when I was a kid all the time, and would REGULARLY sit on the tailgate. Was a great place to gear up, was good for a breeze, was a great way to cool the vehicle. Was good for propping long objects onto as well. I really love side opening rear ends, but the 4R’s design is far superior.

The problem is that there is a list longer than I can count on both hands of reasons they break, and when they do, you can’t open it. It’s a great idea, but as I more or less stated in another thread, Toyota’s engineers sucked, they just had great bean counters that allowed some things to be overbuilt. There are a lot of completely inexcusable design flaws all over this thing.

I forgot to add, I also despise K&N filters. Just use a paper one. As an industrial mechanic we strongly try to NEVER reuse a filter; for anything. Doesn’t matter if it’s for air, coolant, or an oil. Thing gets disposed of and a completely clean NEW filter gets used. We only ever clean and reuse in an emergency. Ever. I’ve had 2 different K&N’s, chucked em. My Eagle currently has a Mopar K&N style that came with my MPFI kit and eventually I’m swapping the air filter system out to utilize a paper filter again. I have to step up a few sizes though. The current intake pulls so hard it’d collapse a same size paper filter.

Oh yeah. True. My friend’s 2009 4Runner glass refused to descend once when we went skiing. Was a massive hassle to extract everything. Ended up being quite expensive for him to get repaired.

We’ ve been looking at the Cayenne and Macan and I wish either one had some sort of tailgate. Seems our only hope is the X5, but my wife doesn't like BMW very much.

Modern range rovers aren't too bad honestly. Just stay on top of maintenance and you'll be okay. Also, check out the Jaguar Fpace those cars are amazing value and you get alot of tech standard.

We haven’t completely ruled them out. She likes the P-cars the most esthetically, but I am having her check out all of the competitors to be sure we don’t overlook anything. As long as it tows over 4k lbs and is an SUV, I hope to have her check it out.
