Yippee! Thanks, Folks for all you guidance on getting Thomson and enthusiasm for Folding . Could be happier with this new box but that’ll come with tweaks. Happy to contribute at least 6-digits to our Folding at full bore while the game (RDR2 ) downloaded. We are working on Covid-19 stuff, aren’t we?
Took 3-days to get the 115Gigs of the game at a miserly 1.02Meg a second. I live inside a Faraday cage so net speeds are naturally slow. A fully bonded sailboat has a #6 wire tied to every bit of metal, and since mine is on the hard, I have a copper rod pounded into the ground. Th us the cage. And 2.4ghz Wifi does not pass thru fiberglass well at all. Any 4 boats in a row row will kill the signal. There’s 1 between me and the AP. My old PC has a long USB cable and dongle outside the cage and above the deck of that other boat and directly in view of that AP. B ut this ne w box sits on the sole with internal Wifi , thus slow D/L speeds. That’s ok since there is a tonne of other stuff to do atm.
So, I let Thomson Fold to it’s hearts content for a couple days. Then I went into Task Mangler to see what it was doing and notice that it is never using more than 35% of the GPU. Usually 0% of the Encode/Decode windows. What am I looking at? Can y’all tell me some tweaks?
I added a 4" case fan to this Acer but it may not be enough. I have a spare radiator in storage so I’m thinking to water cool the CPU and, if possible, the GPU. Twas 90 in the boat today with A/C so I don’t think fans in the case are going to do much more.
Annd.. Kinja still won’t let me post pictures. This one was of my 2 kittehs waiting patiently for treats.

Welcome to the fold. (Get it? :)
Would you be able to place a wifi repeater on the cabin top? I imagine that would help with the signal a lot.

Task manager doesn’t adequately track GPU usage, especially when folding. Download and install MSI Afterburner and it’ll show you usage accurately along with a bunch more information and let you overclock the GPU.
Also folding on the CPU usually isn’t worth much and generates a ton of heat too so you might want to just fold on the GPU.
Am I reading this right that you live in a sailboat? That seems pretty neat, and I bet you have some stories to share about that.

When Thomson is stable, I’ll turn off VanDenHeede and move the good Wifi. Cabin top gets it out of the fiberglass but not good enough. Has to be outside the shrouds; the limits of that Faraday cage, to get the best signal.

Yes. 13-years aboard now. Tooled up and down the East coast a bit but now in a great yard for renovations. Sea air (chloride ions) takes it’s toll on everything. The stories come from racing on other peoples boats, though. :) Thanks for the MSI advise. I’ll d/l it and take a look.

That sounds amazing! Share some stories and pics when you can, I’d love to read them.
Wh at do you do for a career that lets you boat like that?

I don’t have pics. That’s for others to do. I see great sunsets every day. Watch today’s and smile, then see another one tomorrow. Right now is what is important to me. I do share stories, mostly as comments to all ya’lls posts. That’s enough.
35-years in a cubical farm developing software. I started with my code in a box (punch cards) with PMSC and ended by helping build MSPG and ELNK . Been retired for >decade. Find out where the local lake’s beer can races are and ask for a ride. If ya ain’t learning, ask another boat. Eventually you’ll be asked to sail in saltwater. Go! Like going to the track every weekend but cheaper. Every boat needs crew to sail it; not just 1 guy (or 2) to drive it . I love fast cars on a track but a better thrill is days offshore where every hour is work for everyone .
