Alaska National Guard

The bus has long attracted adventurers to an area without cellphone service and marked by unpredictable weather and at-times swollen rivers. Some have had to be rescued or have died. Christopher McCandless, the subject of the book and movie, died there in 1992.

Imagine something being such a magnet for Instagram influencers that the military has to become involved.

Or that people would risk their life looking for it. Social media sucks.

I like to think of it as a type of Darwinism. I genuinely don’t want these people raising kids.

Fucking idiots. Meanwhile, at the Grand Canyon:

I photographed these idiots a few years ago when our family visited.

On a certain level, I can forgive the guy in my photo because he’s just trying to see how far down it goes. The people who are taking selfies and trying to make IG moments? Hard to find sympathy.

But how am I going to get a low angle picture of my butt in yoga pants with my arms raised next to the bus now? Ugh.

We have to feed the Canyon a few souls a year to appease the old gods.

Those people up top look safe, but homeboy below them looks to be on a very unstable piece of rock.

People don’t seem to realize that northern Arizona has hundreds of earthquakes a year.

I visited the bus in 2003. I am also ex-military that actually received survival training. I was my Delta Force friend who came up with the idea and we had enough supplies for 6 weeks. We also saw the rescue cabin. Trick is to always have a buddy and have survival training . :) I am going back to Alaska in about 2 weeks to check on my businesses, I can’t wait.

I saw the bus long before social media was a thing in 2003. If you have proper trainin g and supplies it’s not that big of a deal. You just have to plan well and have a buddy that’s just as prepared. Just thinking you can park your car and walk to it is a bad idea. We ended up spending almost 6 weeks in the wild before we came back to civilization.

To a certain extent I agree. It is frustrating having to save adults from their own stupidity, especially in cases where someone else has to risk their life to do it.

Every time it rains heavily here in Central Texas we have idiots who try to drive their cars across low-water crossings and either get stuck or swept away and then have to be rescued. I’d hate to see the bill that comes after that one. I think there should be a special Idiot Surcharge.

There has to be a study somewhere about how intervening natural selection is becoming problematic or generally a "bad thing" in the long run.
