The 2.5 in the 2021 sport gets 30 more hp (31 more lbs-ft) AND it gets considerably better mileage.
Also I guess I don’t get how the EPA does their numbers but wouldn’t 27/34 be a better combined number under any averaging scheme than 27/33?
I realize its city weighted and the actual numbers could be something like 29.1 vs 30.4 but still. At the very least you will be giving up little to nothing in the city with the 2.5 and gaining on the highway. I suspect in the mountain regions the city mileage on the 2.5 will be much better than the 2.0. Which begs the question...why even have it? does that 1 combined MPG number really help the CAFE scores that much?

Tooling on the 2.0 is probably paid for, and it has a strong parts market..

Bigger question: Why doesn’t the Crosstrek have a turbo yet?
Love that car. Not enough power.

I loved the Crosstrek when I test drove one, it was a bit slow but not awful. I imagine the extra 30 HP makes it much nicer to drive.
It might also be a production capacity issue and I'd expect the 2.5 to get phased in and replace it in the next couple years.

I’m pretty sure the (auto, 2.0
) Crosstrek is the slowest recent production car I’ve driven by some margin, but it’s not entirely the engine’s fault...if it’s available with a manual it would probably be better. Good looking, practical car otherwise, though.

Guessing for MPGs numbers
When i test drove the Impreza i found the 2.0 was missing some power, so that’s why i didn’t even look at the crosstr ek(Which I really did like).
And went directly to the Forester, which i own now.

It wasn’t appreciably slower than the 2012 Focus I was thinking of replacing with it and it was considerably faster than the Prius C I also considered.
I ended up with a TDI sportwagen which is definitely quicker than the Crosstrek despite having similar horsepower figures .

So many people love the crosstrek, but the 2.0 is just not enough engine for that car. Car’s have gotten to the point where an NA 2.o even on the entry level car is just barely enough.

Leftover parts? I’m pretty sure for the last year of the fiesta in the us they made a zetec Line because of a surplus of FiST parts from canceling the model.

Reminds me of the old Corolla’s engines. Really shouldn’t be plural tho because it was the same engine, just with VVT. They put it on the eco trim, got 8 more HP and better mileage ... that should have just been the car’s engine.

it is, but mostly because the 2.5 is only available on the 2 nicest trims. but again, if you offer 2 engines how is that cheaper than offering 1? I t’ s not like the 2.5 is more expensive to make than the 2.0. They are the same engine with different displacements for all intents and purposes.

Thats the most credible theory to date. I suspect that the manual is the ONLY reason the 2.0 still exists. Though its not like they couldn’t just put the manual with the 2.5...they just don’ t wanna.

If the 2.5 is not any more expensive to produce than the 2.0 and still costs more, that’s why it exists. Profits. IIRC, The Crosstrek debuted with the 2.0, so all that R&D whatnot are paid for. Offering two increases profits while keeping the base MSRP relatively low, a key thing for all those sweet marketing campaigns . A MB that starts under 30K!
That’s my guess why it is still there, dolla bills yo!

Maybe, but the current 2.0 was introduced two years before the most recent 2.5, and was concurrent with the 2nd gen Crosstrek launch. It’s possible it was just used as a stopgap until the refreshed 2.5 was ready and they just kept it so they could charge a premium for the 2.5.

I haven't been driving my cream puff grand Marquis due to working from home and the Rona, I have just been driving the wife's Crosstrek since we haven't needed two cars (let alone our 6) I did a fleet oil change and took the Mercury around the block. I forgot that it is an absolute rocketship if you have only driven a Crosstrek for a month.

The real answer is China. Seriously. The the tax structure on vehicles means a huge jump if the displacement is over 2.0L, that’s why every single manufacturer has gone to a 2.0L Turbo to replace V6.

I don’t see the 2.0 in the Crosstrek in the US going much longer. Hopefully the Impreza gets the 2.5 as well. Globally the 2.0 will surely live on.

I know it’s not the case in the US, but some countries tax based on engine size. I guess they still
offer it here because it’s already EPA approved and they have warehouses full of parts. I have seen stupider corporate decisions.

He’s just not driving it hard enough.
The girl I bought the Volvo from, holy shit. I had to ride with her somewhere for work, shes got a 2.0l Impreza hatch, and youd think we were in an STI. I wasn’t scared, she was a great driver, she’s just really quiet and shy around the office, but out on the highway, damn! It was like pedal to the metal, the whole ride.

Having driven a Crosstrek with a manual and the regular I mpreza with the CVT, the stick isn’t better, unfortunately. The Impreza is probably a only a bit lighter but from what I remember the Crosstrek felt 1000lbs heavier when trying to accelerate, which it doesn’t in other aspects of driving. I think the CVT probably has lower gearing from a stop, which makes it feels more sprightly than it is.

This is one of those things that boils down to details(mainly auto v manual) and how you define quick but an auto 2012 Ford Focus got to 60 in 8.0 in car and drivers tests and when they tested a CVT Crosstrek it got to 60 in 10.3 seconds!
That’s a brutally slow 0-60 time for a car in 2015.
I know that Subaru did some slight massaging and reprogramming and got it down to low 9s with the CVT.
The manual equipped cars are much closer; like 7.5 to 8.1.
