"Chinny Raccoon" (chinnyraccoon)

Looks like water got behind the underseal and was trapped. Probably marks the end of the road for this one, at just over 100,000 miles. It’s an essentially worthless car, so devoting time, effort and cash to fixing this properly isn’t worth it.
Time to go shopping for another one.

That’s an easy rust patch. Access from both sides. Nothing too critical in the area..
A small body shop would probably fix it for a reasonable rate. Especially if you just undercoat it.

Oh I could weld it up, but this is a car worth maybe £300, with a plethora of other problems. A couple of grand is in the range for a decent facelift car, with 2zz swapped ones for not much more.

I suspect it would be worth much more on this side of the pond. Just looking at cars.com, the cheapest MR2s they have listed anywhere in the country are $5500. It’s a small sample set, no doubt made smaller by people not wanting to interact with buyers during the pandemic, but still that’s a big gap. The cheap ones look reas onably clean so maybe (hopefully) they don’t have the same rust as yours, but yours would look just as clean (with a wash) so who knows.

Facelift is a weird way to say SW20

There’s loads of them here, I think they originally sold about 10,000, but a fair number have been scrapped now.

They’ve never done anything for me. Mk1 and Mk3 for me.

Used cars in europe are strange in value because the cost of taxes on it but also their MOT prices on failures and retesting costs so much more that it drives the vcalues of used cars down. I’ve been told to search used listings for “ MOT failure” when searching for a classic car to export to the us. good deals.

Yeah, I figured not being able to pass inspection would be the main reason for the price to be so low.

I don’t understand UK car market. I get that it’s a niche sports car, but even with (a small and easily repairable amount of
)
rust, that car should be worth much more than 300. It probably won’t get MOT as is, but to not fix it (especially with low miles) is insane. In the US, many people bemoan the loss of nearly every Ford Puma before they were 25 years old. Honestly you could probably just stick this in a self storage place until it’s 25 then sell it to someone in the US and make money. They’re becoming desirable here. In the last year, three friends of mine have bought Spyders.

The UK is very different from mainland Europe in that regard though. In the UK everything plum mets at lot faster and deeper.

If you decide to part it out, I’ll be interested in the roof frame if it’s at the very least in one piece which mine, well isn’t.

That’s likely to happen as I’ll be swapping the nearly new suspension onto a newer one. You’d be welcome to it, the frame is intact but the roof material has a lot of large holes in it. The guy in Swansea recovers them for about £350. You are somewhere in the London area I thought?

Yeah, pretty much central London. Planned to move the MR2 on since I had some intensive surgery and driving it isn’t comfortable at the moment but the virus put that on ice.
I’m debating whether to sell now for lower or replace the roof and hope for more. The roof itself is actually fine, it goes up and down without a problem and is water tight but it looks ragged and some.
Problem is that there are no frame locally but plenty at the other ends of the country and a long drive in the MR2 is probably not something my body will put up with right now.
That said I might be better off offering you my car.

The thought had crossed my mind...
If it’s not rusted in the same place I could be interested depending on the price you are after.

No holes but surface rust as to be expected. To be upfront, I was looking to get £2800 for it if I did put it up for sale. If you’re interested things to note.
Mechanically the car has been faultless during my ownership. I gave it a major service when I first got it and it sailed through its MOT with no advisories. Plus those troublesome han dbrake cables were replaced so no more handbrake issues to plague the MOT history. So it will happily do another 100,000 miles and more with minimal fuss.
Cosmetically, there are problems though. For starters the previous owner made some interesting mods, namely wheels and the exhaust. The wheels while not to my taste are fine if battered looks wise.
The exhaust system is a bit of a mare though. I t drones at idle and i s bit rusty. The bigger problem though is the cat.
Now the good news is that the cat itself is fine, pretty much as good as new. The bad news is that the heat shield for the cat is utterly buggered. It split in two and rattles when you come of the throttle in the most obnoxious way possible.
Fixing it requires welding but no one is willing to touch it due to the close proximity of the Cat and a £40 weld job isn’t worth destroying a £200 cat. So I’ve been stuck with the rattle my entire owner ship.
Then there is the roof as I mentioned before. All in all it is very much a 10 metre car. Looks great from a distance but up close a bit ragged.
Drop me an email address and I can send you some proper pictures and details if you want any.

I think I might have done a deal on one, so will pass on this for now. If you do want the roof bits I think I will be taking a van to the City at some point in the future, so could sort it out in the same trip. There’s no guaranteed date on that yet.

That would be much appreciated and good luck with the replacement.
