As we last left our incompetent shade tree mechanic:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Ordered the $50 4.5 star heav ier duty pulley puller from Amazon:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
USPS didn’t drop it off at my door. Instead, they used the communal mailbox setup with the two shared package lockers that I loathe. For the third time in 3 months
, they put the key in the wrong mailbox. So now some neighbor is the proud owner of a heav
ier
duty power steering pulley kit.
So we’re currently at:
RockAuto sent me the wrong pump (non-reservoir version despite me explicitly confirming that I needed the reservoir version) . Charged me $10 in shipping to do so. Charged me $10 in return shipping to refund me my $40. Huge loss of respect for RockAuto after that.
Cheap Chinese Amazon puller didn’t work. Amazon was at least chill about the return.
Overpriced Chinese AutoZone puller didn’t work. Use of persuasion to get the pulley off just shattered the pulley. AutoZone chill with the return.
‘Merican puller (that is still probably Chinese) gets misdelivered/stolen.
Irritation level is high, Oppo. Target b udget getting stretched on this project, and not (entirely) because of irrational “while I’m here, wouldn’t it be cool if I did ___” mods.
Must have done something to piss the auto-gawds off.

At this point you could have probably paid a mechanic. Do check with Amazon they have cameras on those boxes.

So the shattered pulley is still on there? Just cut it off. I had to cut off inner bearing race from a wheel hub when I did bearings. It’s nerve wracking because it seems like the result of a fuckup is catastrophic, but it’s fine.
Take the cutoff wheel, put a notch in the pulley close to the shaft, smack the notch with a chisel. It’ll split and come off easy.

Amazon should just send you another if the delivery was messed up. But still a pain to wait.

Can you source a whole pump and pulley from a salvage yard? Should be plentiful?

Can’t really get a cutoff wheel in there (safely) without pulling the pump. But with the pulley broken, I can pull the pump easily enough. The problem is the bolts that mount the power steering pump to the engine are located immediately behind the pulley, so the pulley has to come off (in one piece or in pieces) in order to remove the pump. So that might work for the removal but not the install. BUT if the whole problem was a 20+ year old pulley getting warped after decades of use and it’s now replaced with a new one on a remanufactured pump, the installation might be a breeze. (Famous last words!)

At this point, probably not. But by the time this is finally fixed, yeah.
I live in a neighborhood that has a communal mailbox. Makes it easier for the post office to deliver mail. Instead of going door to door, they just open one huge door and stick everything into every individual’s slots. There are two doors for packages.
The postal delivery person put the key in the wrong slot. The whole concept is B.S. as t his happens to me once a month. If I am lucky, a neighbor does the right thing and returns my packages. If I’m unlucky, they get free ish. Amazon says “USPS says it was delivered!” USPS says “we say it was delivered!” And all I can do is ask that they deliver my packages to my door where I have cameras, which they refuse to do because it takes time for them to do.

It’s not Amazon’s fault (with the exception of using USPS, but even when they ship things UPS, UPS uses USPS for the last leg delivery sometimes). The problem is you’re paying someone $17 to deliver mail and giving them quotas on delivery rates so they really don’t care.

The pump is remanufactured and I have a new pulley. I suspect the pulley just got warped over years of use or the previous owner tried to replace the leaking pump, damaged the pulley, then just sold it “as-is”.
Classic Jason looking at a car, seeing a problem, and thinking - “I can fix that!” Only to be one of those “If it was an easy fix, why didn’t the previous owner fix it?” problems.

It’s not their fault, but it’s still there responsibility. They’ll send you a new one and either get reimbursed by USPS for the misdelivery, or they expect X% of packages will be lost and just have that worked into their contract. Regardless I would be shocked if you get even the slightest amount of pushback from Amazon over asking them to send a replacement (or canceling the order if you don’t want to wait) .

Hm. Can’t fit a dremel tool with a 1" cutoff in it? If you can’t get a grinder in there, I can’t imagine there’s clearance to get a chisel to do the breaking part. If it’s this odd a job, it might be worthwhile to have it towed to a shop. How have others on forums dealt with this?
