"Deal Killer - Powered by Focus" (dealkiller-ii)

After carefully considering the comments from my post last week, I went and bought the 200SX anyway. The dealer came down quite a bit on the price, it checked out mechanically and there is absolutely no rust. Now, my son and can spend the weekend cleaning the interior, polishing the exterior and fix a few odds and ends. Anyone know why the tach would be bouncing around like a bean? I’m assuming a loose connection somewhere but I haven’t had time to really dig into it yet. It is a cute little thing though.

It has an airbag, so way safer than my Datsun.

It has two, so, at least twice as safe.

my sister had a 95 Nissan Sentra the same color as her first car. Never gave her any trouble other than having to put gas... :|

For the tach, its possible a capacitor on the gauge cluster circuit board has gone bad. It seems to be fairly common on ‘90s Nissans. Should be as simple as removing the gauge cluster, desoldering the faulty capacitor and soldering on a new capacitor of the correct specs.

When I was in the GMASEP college program there was an instructor of mine who had one of these in this color and was a stick. He was also missing his right hand. Idk how he drove it, but after seeing that I don’t wanna see a single excuse from anyone ever about not being able to drive stick.

That is a nice looking 90s nugget there. I dig it!
I am astonished one that clean exists anywhere.

This thing’s begging to be autocrossed or otherwise flogged within an inch of its life. Congrats on the purchase!

And retractable seat belts, don’t forget about that safety feature. My Nissan has fixed 3-point seat belts.

I don’t think many people complain about not being physically able to drive stick (though being missing your shifting hand seems like a good excuse). They either just don’t have an opportunity or need (when only something like 1% of new cars sold are manual transmission, it’s increasingly less likel y that people will have a car to learn on).

So? You get one. I sold a mint condition Fully loaded low mileage bronco to buy a saab that sat in a barn for a couple years so I could have a car to learn stick on.

Buying a car to learn stick on seems like serious overkill. Especially if you don’t plan on regularly driving a stick shift car (and there are plenty of reasons to prefer automatics, as evidenced by 99% of the cars sold in the US ) . There are of course reasons to like stick shifts as well, but it’s a choice that’s totally unnecessary for most people, so why spend significant resources to acquire a skill that may never be needed and would be rusty even if you did need it at some point in the future?

I actually had to fix the driver side belt, as it was twisted into the retracting device. I love 90's built cars. Panels just pull right out for easy interior access. Untwisted the belt, works like a charm.

It would be interesting to compare this with my N15 Almera. Different chassis codes and markets but close enough to one another that you can bolt on swap body panels and probably a lot of mechanical parts too.
Also, if these rust anything like the N15s do everything you can to protect it!

The whole car is a bit grungy. I took some rubbing compound to the hood and it polished up fairly well. Even brought out the headlights a bit. My son and I will be cleaning and polishing this weekend.

I’ve driven stick shift once in the past 3 years. It had been over 2 since I had driven it semi-regularly. Seems like some pathetic automatic scum excuses if you ask me.
If you want to really call yourself an enthusiast, you should always put an asterisk if you don’t learn to drive manual.

I had this thing in silver! It was a ‘97 SE. It was slow as a pig but I beat the nuts off it. It had TONS of suspension mods and it gripped like PB on the roof of your mouth. It was plagued with the 1/4 panel rust but I loved it until an old man in an old Mercury ran a stop sign and destroyed it.
