Eight years ago, I took this photo and made the bold claim that the Bullitt Mustang was my favourite car of all time. While I realize now that was probably a lie, I'm still looking for one.

I remember a car reviewer talking about the SN95 gen Bullitt exhaust sounding like a combination of a scream and a moan, he was right, best sounding exhaust from a modular Ford 4.6L. I wonder if the S197 sounds as good?

I do like the subtle nature of the S197 Bullitt. I remember buying a set of Bulli tt wheels and tires for my 2005 Mustang GT convertible. I bought them off Craigslist and the guy had a new Bullitt with shiny chrome wheels and a bunch of aftermarket aero bits (faux side vents, hood scoop, etc.). I thought, why even buy a Bullitt if that’s what you are going to do with it?

Well, to each their own, I at least got a nice set of wheels and tires for cheap.

One of my child hood dream cars will always be a 2006 Mustang GT in either red, blue, or black with the Torq Thrust style wheels.

My friend’s dad had an ‘08 that I got to drive one night.

After owning an SN95 3.8 and 5.0, then moving to an LS1 F Body (also daily drove a 400/TH400 ‘80 Formula) , the S197 Bullitt really surprised me with how big a leap the chassis was over the previous fox-based platform. It felt more F Body-like, especially the seating and power. You’re very upright in a Fox or SN95, but you’re tucked in a bit more on these. The shift action was tight, the 3V sounded excellent and those 3.73's are a Godsend in a sea of vehicles typically equipped with highway friendly ratios.

The retro tid bits are just enough to hint that it’s special, but it’s low key enough that only those in the know will know what it is. Each generation of Bullitt Mustangs have been an excellent example of how to properly execute a special edition. I love them all, especially when they’re Dark Highland .

One of my neighbors at the apartments I lived in the mid 2000s had one.

I loved my S197 Mustang. I've wanted another one, maybe a stage 2 Roush or Bullitt, for years.
