The whole thing is good, but the advice he would give to 20 year old him is the most powerful.

There’s a certain level of gravitas and perspective that you can only get by being one of the precious few in space.
There’s a quote from a TV show that I enjoy ‘Emperors and Messiah s outnumber us’ when talking about the amount of people who have been to space .
Chris Hadfield is a seriously awesome person.

Actual life advice: don’t choose fighters when you graduate from flight school. You’ll never build enough hours for a solid civilian flying career.

The “everyone’s struggling” bit is a certai nly a life lesson most of could have be ne fited from .
I was lucky enough to see Hatfield speak at a conference a couple of years ago. Dude’s an amazing motivational speaker. His presentation had damn all to do with the subject of the conference, but it was worth going along just to hear him talk about the experience of being EVA outside the ISS as it went through the Aurora Australis

Choose helicopters. That’ s where the fun jobs are and ex-military pilots always seem to get the cool jobbers.

Do they even do that anymore? Seems like all the life flight pilots I know got their start in the military. Same with Heli-guiding. which...yeah...that’ s a great gig.

Allen Barklage flew helicopters in Vietnam. It got him a job flying a traffic helicopter in St. Louis. It was mostly a boring job, but it included plenty of flight hours. There was occasional excitement.

Three or four .44 special rounds at close range probably did the trick very effectively.

Having met Hadfield in the 90s, I’m shocked at how he has turned philosopher. He was your typical fighter pilot, with typical fighter pilot attitude. I kinda thought he was a jerk at the time. Especially compared to the Apollo folks and some of the early shuttle astronauts I’ve met. But it may have been nervousness masking itself with bravado, and that’s seemingly washed off as he’s proven himself in space. Who knows, maybe all astronauts
start that way.

P8 or Cargo FTW.Lower risk and crazy number of flight hours. And P8 pilots get to go home every night.
