It’s just like being on the road, with a slightly lower chance of getting shot.
And my current home? Just a little quieter...

Is this color scheme for Pride month, or has it always been like that?
What site btw? I’d like to check area 51.

We were supposed to fly to SNA today for a few days at Disneyland. Then we were going to fly home from LAX after a family reunion in Santa Barbara .

Bummer. I haven’t been home in 2.5 years and I miss OC, except when I have to drive there. I went to get some computer parts yesterday at a fairly remote location and was able to maintain 80+ MPH speeds for extended periods of time; somehow I doubt I would have been able to pull that off in SoCal even during the shutdown...

I think the colors indicate altitudes. I clicked on some red spots that looked like balloons and they’re up around 60,000+ ft. seemingly wandering around up there. Weather balloo ns? Do they still send those up?

I’m really itching to take a road trip, or just to get away from here. Been holed up for more than three months now. One bright side, though, is my son is working in getting his license, so we’ve been going on long drives to no particular place so he can get experience. He’s good enough now that we can play some tunes and I can relax, so it’s a nice break from the tedium.

I really like that ADS-B site, btw. I only recently discovered it, and I particularly like tracking the military stuff (at least the stuff that is squawking).

The red spots are balloons that provide internet access to remote locations .

Yes, the colors indicate the aircraft’s altitude. You can turn that off if you want. What I like about this particular site is the ability to track military aircraft, at least those that are announcing their presence.

I’ve been thinking of a road trip to get some car parts, but I’ll probably just continue to bum around the house. Over the last week I managed to do even less than usual, and that’s saying something. The week prior it was migraines, but this week? I don’t know, just a lack of energy. I really need to get out and exercise a bit as I’ve unfortunately put on a few pounds over the last few months. It’s essentially summer, and thus damn hot. Since I can’t sleep, or at least not during normal hours, I think I’ll try going out at 0500 for an hour or two. The iPod is charged up and I’ve got some slick earpod clones, and I figure that any exercise is good at this point.
Unlike SoCal but much like STL, it looks like you can probably get just a few miles from home and be in the middle of nowhere. It’s probably the best way to get your son some practice in a relatively safe environment. But sometimes I wonder if you’re better off learning in an open area or somewhere crowded? My sister and I both learned in SoCal, and once you survive that you can pretty much beat anything (except maybe Manhattan - I still remember my usually calm dad somewhat freaking out about having to drive in NYC during a visit there years ago) . But then there’s her son, who wrecked his new car on the way home from the dealer before he even had his license. I don’t know if times have changed, he didn’t have a good teacher or something else - maybe he’s just an idiot...

Cool! I’d heard of that as a concept, but I didn’t realize that it was already operational. I guess the only thing you have to worry about up there are U-2s...

I don’t know if it’s the same site, but I use Flightradar24 at work .
Pretty interesting seeing some long-haul intercontinental flights go up and over the arctic. Obviously, it’s the best route, but it doesn’t look like it would be the case with the flat map projection.

My son will be 18 in September, and still doesn’t have his license. Everybody is different, but I think an extra year has made a huge difference. Yesterday we ended up in a rather narrow, twisty road. Not my intention, but he handled it well. We need to do some interstate driving, and some US highway stuff. He needs to finish up before school “starts” in the fall, but just because he has his license doesn’t mean he’s ready to drive on his own. Of course, the sooner he gets it, the sooner I have to start paying more insurance.

Yeah. My grandparents used to live near a NOAA site, and a couple times a week they launch them.
