I had a roadie buddy who had long hippie hair and shaved his legs. He would get a lot of cat calls then  turn to the offending party with a big smile. The look on those guys faces when they saw Jeff was priceless.

heh . I’m a small, slight guy. Some dude caught up to my buddy and I riding and as he pulled up alongside, he said “Hi ladies! . He was embarrassed and/or disappointed after he got a better look. “oops, sorry!”.

I’m headed up to get pie pockets next week, but not on my bike. You’ve got guts.

Pie pockets?!

My entire reason to ride was to ditch the diet for a burger at the Notchtop Cafe.

US34 generally has a wide shoulder with 35-40mph limits. Plus I think the curves force drivers to get off their phones and pay attention.

Colorado Cherry Company! There’s one on 34 and 36. I guess not really that close to Estes but that’s usually the end destination when I stop at one. I’ll have to try the Notchtop Cafe though.

When I had long hair, the spandex bike shorts got some attention from the idiots, but I let my beard generate the response.

Damn. When I got off the shuttle van at Estes (engineering meetup at my last job) I walked 100’ dragging my luggage behind me and thought I was going to die.

Can’t imagine riding there.

G ot caught doing 5 mph behind a delicately coiffed longhair with at least 1/2 his ass hanging outside his shorts at any point during the average pedal stroke. R everse dropped that out of immediate sight until I could avail myself of opportunity to fly by.

That’s impressive. I’ve been to Estes Park once and walking from the t-shirt shop to the brewery was all the exercise I could manage.

We need laws against that. OTOH, a woman stopped me to tell me that my friend has amazing calves.

If you take the quiet road north of US 34, there’s a shop in Glen Haven with amazing cinnamon buns and cherry cobbler I’m told.

I’m not a big cherry fan - those pits get irritating. But yes, I’ve passed CO Cherry Co on 34. Any other reason I should stop there if I’m not a cherry fan?

Notchtop has good burgers. A third friend loves their soup or chowder or something like that.

I spent the last 35 years sitting on my butt in Milwaukee. It’s taken two years to get back into riding and acclimate to the altitude. And this year, I finally feel reasonable. Not fast by any means but able to ride 60 miles with 4800 ft of climbing.

I’ve seen recent posts about struggling beginners here lately. Maybe I should post a ‘You can do it if I can do it’ since I started where they are and I’m still in the bottom 2% of Strava stats..

They have apple and peach pie pockets (like...pie calzones?) and cider too. And pot pies and regular dessert pies that are pretty good. I’m not a huge cherry fan either.

Glen Haven looks like a nice little drive. Maybe I’ll take an  afternoon of just exploring up that way.

Funny story about that road —when i was a broke student I was passing thru and camped up outside estes park. In the morning I was leaving to go down thru boulder and out towards kansas when the temp gauge shot up.

Turns out the hose from the radiator to the water pump had inexplicably fallen off @ the radiator exit. Dumped all my coolant on the road, probably ended up in the stream.

Not having tools, AAA, or any better sense, I just threw the truck in neutral and coasted down to the first service station I could find. I had juuuust enough momentum... I was doing about 3 mph when I pulled in. I can only imagine what the people behind me thought.

If you like switchbacks, there’s steep ones between Estes and Glen Haven. Don’t forget the cinnamon buns in GH. I’ll stop at the Cherry Co next time on your say so.

yike - there’s some curves you gotta brake for regardless of what you’re driving. There must be a service station halfway down in Drake that I’ve never noticed.
