That parallel did not escape me. Did you notice, though, that the names on the cockpit are reversed in that shot?

Oh yeah! There're in the right direction but upside down. Typical result of a photoshop flip. I never noticed.

They flipped something somewhere, but I’m wondering why they flipped the Tomcat and not the “MiG.” Of course, the scene goes by so quickly, I doubt many people noticed in the theater.

Yeah, who knows. Also, do you remember what planes they used for MiGs?

T-38s, I believe, or two-seat F-5s.

I seem to remember they used F-5s for the aggressor planes. I wasn’t sure about the MiG impersonators. A quick google confirms F-5s.

Yup. The F-5 has a much longer, pointier nose than the T-38.

Ok, you have a bajillion dollars. You are fully  trained and have a maintenance crew. You can have one Cold War fighter as your personal toy. What’s your pick?

I’m thinking a Phantom would be the way to go. There are faster and more maneuverable options, but it is pretty much the icon of its time.

Phantom. No question. I get tingly just looking at those photos. Looking at that shot, I can’t imagine what it must have been like to strap that thing on, to be nestled inside so much power . Some wag here on Oppo opined that the Phantom remained airborne through sheer brute force over aerodynamics. It’s such an iconic beast, one of my favorites.

Smoke and thunder. That’s what it was all about. All the crazy angles mixed with curves.

Oh that’s a tough choice. Phantom? Love it but: Third. Controversial, yes. First...Vought Crusader. Second, the F 104 Starfighter. I know, it has limitations but the pilots wore these spurs that they locked into the ejection seats just before punching out. Think about it, spurs jingling all the way out to a missile with a man in it.  Bad.  Ass.

Plus both the 104 and the Crusader had guns. Phantom was an add on.
