After rocking her for a long time without the snorkel, I finally decided to get one back on.
I cheated this time and bought a kit, but I still had to cut it and modify. Got everything mocked up and the hole in, now I just need to mesh/glass it together.

Is there a reason that the inlet on vehicle snorkels face forward? I’ve always thought that this would increase the chances of sucking in water, but there must be a reason. I thought I knew, but I forgot - get ting old sucks...

I think you need a new project. This one is just bouncing off the limiter.

I can imagine there's airflow issues at high speed because there would be dead air in the lee le the snorkel, and possibly even a vacuum effect from the airflow.

Snorkels aren’t mea nt for water, they’re meant for dirty/dusty/sandy air

Almost entirely, yes. Some increase fording depth but those are really limited to the military. The marines have a snorkel kit that bring a hmmv fording depth to like 50 inches or something. That kit includes an exhaust snorkel as well.
Edit: Found it in action. That depth would submerge the stock air filter.

I would think if you were hitting the water fast enough to get it that high, you had issues before the water hit your intake.........

This one is just finally nearing completion after almost a decade and it’s a wonderful feeling.

Yeah, you’re right. My mindset is not in tune with the off-road set - I’m not used to driving slowly...

I will admit though, many off-roaders who do a lot of water crossing do generally have them turned backwards.
I don’t see that much deep water, maybe once or twice a year, and I’m always careful in crossing, so water should never get that high to cause an issue.

Five years ago I saw a bunch of people slow down and crawl around what appeared to be a little bit of flooding on the freeway. I was frustrated from a tough day at work and just wanted to get home - NOW - and thought to myself that they were all a bunch of little pussies so I proceeded to drive into what turned out to be some pretty deep water. My car started to sputter and then died. I managed to get it restarted, but it was painfully slow and stuck in limp-home mode. Oh shit...
Thankfully it was a relatively minor problem - I had drawn some water into the air box and soaked the filter. I put it in the oven overnight at low temp to dry it out, reset the computer and everything was fine the next day. The only casualty was the horn, which probably rusted shut after a few days. I knew that the circuit was OK since I could hear the relay click, so grabbed a horn from a Volvo at the junkyard and tossed it in. On the bright side, it sounded just like my old VW Vanagon, and I loved the sound of that born.
I learned a few things that day: 1) don’t be so impatient to get home no matter how much you want to be there and 2) I really don’t want one of those ‘cold air’ intakes, as I probably would have hydrolocked my engine if I had one...

Speed is the major factor IMO.
You have to find that balance of “fast enough the water can’t rush in your engine bay, yet slow enough you don’t slam water in your intake.”
I’ve had my van in water over the headlights without snorkel.
