Father of the original 911 engine and it’s derivatives, and the 917 engine and pretty much the rest of that epic car AND then some more. He passed away yesterday, aged 90.

Without this man, there would be no 911, no 917, or even Porsche motorsports history as we know it today. His efforts in developing the 917 Can Am are the reason we have the 930 and it’s legendary performance, and decades of turbocharged Porsche cars; perhaps, even the reason why turbocharged vehicles are so widespread and mainstream today. So legendary is his name, that the water cooled 996 and 997 GT3 motors were nicknamed “Mezger engines” with their dry sump lubrication and racing pedigree, much similar to the original air cooled motors.

He was also responsible for the TAG-Porsche V6 that powered the McLaren MP4/2, and the same engine that found it’s way into the rear of a 911 soon later that debuted at Goodwood last year.

With such achievements and a legacy like that, you know he didn’t waste his life. Porsche owes a lot of it’s success to this brilliant engineer, this legendary designer.

It’s all his fault. My whole life around cars, motivated by this guy’s engines. He and Paul Rosche, really. I am not a religious man, but if there’s an afterlife of any kind, I like the idea of those two greeting each other over beers and designing something totally ridiculous on the back of a napkin for (deity of choice) to tool around in.

Great write up on a giant in race car engineering.
