I was looking on YouTube for jams to annoy CB when this popped up in my recommended side bar. That’s how I learned Doug actually bought a Stinger . Go figure. He’s also putting his AMG wagon up as the first bid for his auction site (and that’s how I learned he owned an AMG wagon).

I also rarely look at YouTube comments, but there are some decent ones on there. My favorite so far is, “Doug the type of guy to get locked inside his motorcycle”. Not fair, but funny.

Listening to 5:00 on should be required viewing for anyone who wants to spend more than $40k on a car.

The $40,000 used is where he wants to be to get everything you want. But he mentioned a $135,000 new car going down to $40,000 in 5 years, something he can’t afford to do.

These days, if we limit ourselves to $40,000 brand new, we wouldn’t have access to the majority of the auto market these days.

I think my favorite “Doug the type of guy....” comment was on one of the super luxury cars where someone said “Doug the kinda guy who burps into a napkin when eating dinner alone”.

That’s a good one.

I get that, but most expensive new cars also depreciate like crazy in the first few years. If you’re okay with that, and can afford it, great. If not, make another choice.

I absolutely agree, my issue is things have gone above in price beyond inflation that vehicles today are just so expensive, especially the ones you really want. Average new price is now over $37,000!

The smart thing is always used, but catch 22 is that it doesn’t count in sales and the cars we want stop getting built because not enough people are buying them new because they are too expensive.

I give Doug props for buying that Kia Stinger new, he is doing his part.

I submitted a car to his new auction site, and while it didn’t work out to sell it there, I had a really pleasant, frank conversation with Doug about it . He’s a class act.

That’s cool. I’ve never spoken to him outside of trading a couple of forum comments, but I’ve never had any reason to think he’s not a great guy. He certainly seems a cut above the usual YT influencer.

Absolutely. And Doug does his calculations like many of us here who switch cars after a few years or less. If you buy a car to keep it for it s entire life, the equation changes completely. You just have to decide what your priorities are. That’s why I am kind of surprised Doug made a big deal about the out of date features in his new 2018 car. He is taking advantage of depreciation, and he is well aware of the allowances you have to make in that calculation.

The smart thing is almost always used, and especially as the sticker price of the car gets higher. Still, many people buy new because they want full warranty and the latest and greatest. If you plan to keep you car for it’s life, depreciation doesn’t matter to you. Then again, if you with expensive cars, you only have to wait a couple of years to get a much better price on an almost new car. You just have to be willing to give up the warranty and have the latest tech.

I guess that answers the question I had about whether it was really his venture, or if he was just the face and promo for it (for equity).

Why didn’t it work out?

I didn’t watch the whole video, but I think it’s to his credit to be negative for anyone else who’s looking to purchase the same car.

Definitely, I was delighted it was Doug . T hey wanted a relatively low reserve ( to ensure their early listings s ell , understandably) , and there’s an amount I definitely need to get out of the car if I sell it, and we just couldn’t quite get to a number that worked for both of us.

Gotcha. Does BaT do something similar with their reserve, or can sellers set it wherever they want?

They do. I haven’t submitted it there yet—might try to sell locally first—but it would be interesting to see the difference.

I guess good on Doug for trying to set the reserve at a reasonable point to get as many sales as possible for his bidders. I can imagine how painful it is to make the choice to go ahead and bid, and get excited about winning a car you want, just to learn your bid didn’t hit reserve.

Selling a car at an unacceptably low reserve price would be much more painful than not getting to buy one because the seller didn’t want to sell it at your bid price. Reserves need to be reasonable for sellers too, or you won’t have any cars for people to bid on . But it certainly makes sense at this early launch stage to try to keep them very low or nonexistent, we weren’t that far apart, and Doug was great to deal with . I’ve bid on plenty of cars that didn’t meet reserve , and as a seller I ’ve lowered my reserve to ensure a car sold that otherwise wasn’t going to hit it . Neither is particularly painful.

Oh, for sure.

I’m just thinking in particular of a guy who finally has the means to buy his rare-ish dream car, and it comes up for auction, and he gets up the nerve to register as a bidder, and bids it up and “wins” at fair market value, only to learn that it didn’t hit reserve.
