Is this real “best practice” for your spare fuel supply?
-Asking for a friend, who saw it driving out to AZ this week

Sketchy, but legal.

It did occur to me that this could be “defensive”....

In fairness, my converted FZJ has a strap shelf for two jerry cans... but it’s mounted up high and is completely surrounded by metal and framework.
This just seems wrong, down in the bumper zone.

It would make sense if nearly anything tailgating wasn’t able to stop faster than that RV.

Except a distracted driver literally hitting the side of a barn unaware it was there.

I remember this game.
Anal Tioga with a splash of that would get a laugh during a road trip.

Yeah, although I’m always shocked in SoCal to see so many cars and trucks with no working brake or tail lights. Can tell there’s no vehicle inspection in Cali.

Standard practice with tanks, back in the day.
Not at “bumper height”, but in an environment where it’s being shot at, so...
Bottom line - a giant gas fire at the rear of a vehicle is bad, but a giant gas fire inside the vehicle is arguably worse.

this is good method. if you get someone following too closely you can set one loose and it will smash into their car and burst into flames hollywood style.

In fairness, it could have been “potable water”, but that seems likely to end badly, too...

in fairness carrying your potable water in such a non-potable container is as idiotic as carrying fuel on the rear of your vehicle.

I sold my old Tioga about 8 years ago. After about 50,000 miles the only body damage it had was the bumper and fiberglass right below the ladder.

I may have been guilty of this a time or two. I felt it was better to risk getting rear-ended with a few fuel cans than risk carrying cans inside our Explorer. The last time I filled cans in preparation for a named storm, I put them in my trailer. I suppose they were a little safer there, but if I’d been rear-ended, the result would have been fuel everywhere. Come to think of it, all of the yard guys with trailers have cans of fuel strapped onto the trailer somewhere.

Test driving some of the lower teir cars on Craigslist can be eye opening for what people find acceptable.
95 altima that looked clean in the pics, Brakes wobble like death, all shocks are blown, tires worn weird and dry rotted, clutch is nonexistent, engine feels like its 5 seconds away from head gasket failure. Dudes talking about how it he drives it every day
