This is VERY Japanese. We experienced a bartender who took his cocktails this seriously while in Kyoto. The bar was maybe the size of my kitchen and had 5 people including us and the bartender present. We had two drinks each and were hammered. So we had one more and he called us a cab when we were ready to leave. Our hotel was maybe 3 blocks away...

Kyoto has excellent drinking spots. My favourite was a narrow alley and when we went in there were only a few locals inside. I think the bartenders were hesitant to serve us at first, but one spoke English well enough that my friend and I could have basic conversations with him. Made some great whisky recommendations, a lot of Japanese and even American stuff I can’t even find in Canada.
By any chance, do you happen to remember the name of the bar or what general area it was in? I looked back at where I was in Kyoto and can find a couple of bars I didn’t enjoy as much but can’t find the one I really liked.

That root beer cocktail looks very interesting, except that’s a lot of allspice to put in one drink. I’d be surprised if it isn’t too overpowering. Then again, the rest of the ingredients aren’t subtle either.
Also, why is the bartender looking at me like he’s going to rufie my drink?

I’m pretty sure it was called Nap Bar. Was in an alley on the third floor I think. We were staying in the hotel attached to the train station so it’d be pretty close to there.
I don’t think they tax their booze the same way we do in Canada. We went into a few liquor stores and they had stuff that worked out to be $20 cheaper a bottle than here in Canada.
