This is a, uh, unique CL ad where the guy isn’t selling anything, he’s just complaining about the price of Miatas (and using a pricing heuristic that’s at least two years out of date?)

I’m pretty sure they are worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for them. I admit, I admire what this guy is trying to do, but they are climbing in value...

For posterity:
“ First Gen NA (1990-1997) with over 100k miles should not cost more than $3500 for one in excellent condition.
Second Gen NB (1999-2005) with over 100k miles should not cost more than $4000 for one in excellent condition.
Third Gen NC (2006-2015) prices vary significantly since the NC3 is still a relatively new car, but an NC1 should not cost more than $5000 for one with over 100k miles.
Mods such as wheels/suspension/rollbars might add value for a very specific buyer but generally not for most people.
Automatic Miatas are almost worthless, especially the NA.
People pay on average $800-$1000 for a hard top. Maybe up to $1200 for a pristine example with headliner and defrost.
Stop encouraging these ridiculous prices for such cheap cars."

Sadly, this guy is very wrong. Sure wish I could get a nice NB for even $5,000. I have noticably seen the prices rise as the summer sets in, maybe not directly due to COVID.

How about this $17,500 S2000 over on 1-877-CARS-AND-BIDS

It is sad when prices go up. This spring has done the same to motorcycle and even bicycle prices. Demand if high right now. And the Covid19 checks didn’t help

That’s normal summer convertible price swelling I’d imagine.

The lineage is all that matters here - who wouldn’t want a car owned by the King of Prussia?!

Sadly, yes, since I have been seriously considering an NB Miata but haven’t quite saved up enough for the difference before summer set in.

This guy posted a wanted: Volvo 1800 ad near me and it always throws me for a loop. Do those ever actually help? I don’t think so.

I’ve been watching Craigslist like a hawk trying to determine when prices will best be in my favor, since I have to sell before I can buy.

I see these on Ferrari chat all the time. Often, only a few threads above the exact car they are looking for. But then the poster usually squabbles over some very minor detail and always says they aren’t willing to pay what the owner is asking. So from what I’ve seen, these do not do anything, because the type of person to post a wanted ad wants something in their exact spec, but only willing to pay the absolute bottom market price

You can either get a good deal on whatever is available or you can pay the lowest someone is willing to accept if they have the exact spec you are looking for. Beggars can't be choosers. Yeah, I seriously doubt they often get any leads at all from them.

I was tempted to do so, and specifically tell him that $3000 sounded really cheap. But I decided that might be too assholely, so I just flagged his ad instead.

Automatic Miatas are almost worthless, especially the NA.
I feel we should help propagate this objective automotive truth...
...so I can get one for nothing.

That is some wishful thinking. Sad to say, automatic NAs are probably more valuable now than any time in the last decade.

His “ideal” prices are unrealistic pricing for what they actually list and sell for. The market is not determined by “value”. It is determined by market pressure and trends. While I think those are pretty decent numbers for “fair” or “good” shape cars, anything thats actually excellent will sell for far more than that. The number of miles doesnt matter a whole lot but how many stupid mods and crashes its been through and what shape the paint is in is far more important.
For reference in Socal I paid $4400 for my 1 owner miata with no accidents and no mods. This was a WAY fairer price than anything else that I looked at. Sure it has 250,000 miles on it and the paint is sun burnt and im having high mileage issues. But everything else was in worse shape and cost way more. And that is just for NBs. NAs command a $1k premium just because of the novelty.

I had an automatic NA miata for sale. I had it for sale for a long time... I didn’t hate driving it.
The only reason I was able to sell it was that I included manual swap parts with the sale.
