Just saw Doug’s plug on his new defender video for his new auction website: Cars&bids.com - also read on below for stream of consciousness thoughts on auction websites.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Seems like a lot of these are starting to pop up with the huge success of BaT. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for instance.
While I’ve never won an auction or sold a car at auction, what Randy Nonnenberg of BaT said on the most recent TST podcast is very interesting. He thinks Auctions are far superior because price negotiations go UP rather than prices starting high, stagnating and then bidders start to low ball. This also increases the speed at which things sell and the open forum creates a ton of credibility and bidder confidence (whether real or not).
Either way, auction websites seem strange without a niche... and I wonder when we will reach market saturation.

Would you buy a used car from this man?

Ok, so we have FleaBay, Bring a Trailer, Hemmings, and BarnFinds all in this space already, plus Dougslist (h/t to Chariotoflove).
Who am I missing ?
You are now here:

I really do like reading through the comment sections on BaT. Lots of good information (bad information is
corrected), and lots of true enthusiasts who are generally respectful to others. For Doug’s venture to succeed, he’ll have to build a similar community where sellers, bidders and spectators all feel welcome to get involved, ask questions, and share info & opinions.

Not too late to rebrand!

What’s Fleabay?

Ebay. Although oddly enough, there is a fleabay.net. Much like www.untied.com, I guess.
Though United apparently got untied.com off the interwebs.

I think his name is more of an SEO play? Dougslist is clearly a better name given the demise of the CList marketplace.

Do you think he wears multiple shirts because he films videos in such rapid succession? like he just takes off the top shirt and films another video in another location.

We are just not supposed to know the answer to some questions.

I bet he’s self conscious of either showing tracings of his nipples or maybe sweaty armpits or something. One of those would at least be understandable and a tiny bit relatable. If it’s a
nything else - I will lose my shit.

OK thanks. I thought it was something else besides eBay.

So, do you think this was actually Doug’s idea, or someone else’s idea that they pitched to him, and
made him a partner for the traffic he could drive to it?

Hard to say, especially since I’m not really a Doug Watcher. But it’s not like it’s an original idea. All he had to do is look around. It may have evolved from conversations over time, like the one someone said he recently had with Matt Farah.
Don’t you think he would have to partner with someone though? I would guess (without really knowing) that an undertaking like this is to big and expensive for one man to launch alone.

It looks like its the same story as BAT: primarily European cars that sell for more than they’re worth.
Also, I have heard nothing but bad things about DD from the people who worked directly with him while he was in Porsche. Stopped watching him ages ago when I first heard from an ex-coworjer that he sort of sucked.

He did mention in one of his videos that the double shirt situation is sweat-related.

I’m sure he has partners - I’m just wondering if this is just something he’s lending him name & promotion to, not actually something he conceived of and brought all the pieces together to make happen.

It’s not easy, that’s for sure, but one thing that Doug always did incredibly well when we was a Jalopnik writer was to respond to nearly every single person who commented on one of his articles. That’s how you gain a loyal following, and get people to root for you to succeed. No idea if he can put in that much time now that he’s got so many balls in the air, but if he’s an active participant in many of the sales threads on the new site, I could see that helping to build the community he needs & wants.

He has 3.5 millions subscribers on YouTube.

Well then, I guess it could, provided some of them have money.

We’ll see. I feel like it will either take off and work in these next couple months, or it will end up quickly as an also-ran.

He’s driven so many cars, I’m sure he could submit an opinion on most auctions he hosts.
