My Cannondale Fatty Whatever Headshock bike currently has Specialized Roubaix Pro 700x25/28C tires on it that are cracking. This tire doesn’t seem to be readily available any more. Given that my longest ride is less than 20 miles, given that I am a lardass, and given that I like the supple feel of the ride of these tires, what would Oppo recommend as a replacement? Also, because lardass, and because I frequently carry cargo on the back of the bike, should I consider increasing the cross section of the rear tire?

I’m running vittoria voyagers on my bikes and like them quite a bit. Good rolling resistance, good puncture resistance, feel good under me. Do recommend. Far and away better overall than the Specialized, Continentals, and Schwalbes I had used previously imho, at least the models I personally tested.

I can’t tell you if these are lardass-rated, but I put Continental Gatorskin clinchers on my hand cycle , and I am happy with the way they roll for the couple months I’ve had them. If they have them in the width you want, they might do well for you. They are lauded for their toughness against punctures. They are not the cheapest tire, but not the most expensive either. They are a good value, I think.

I don’t know what kind of room you have, but I really like the Bontrager Select K 700x35s on my cross bike.
I’m also a fan of Kenda Kwest 26 x1" that I used to run on my MTB. I also like Specialized Nimbus. I have a set of those on my old road bike.
The Select K and Kwest are more supple than the Nimbus, but I think the Nimbus has better flat protection.

I recently switched to Panaracer Gravel King’s on my Straggler. They’re pretty puncture resistant but still roll fast. They’re nice n fat which means a cushy ride on the roads around me. But they’ll definitely be slower than your 25C tires. I think mine are 700x43C. .

WTB Horizon. Mine are 47mm or almost 2" wide. It's like floating on a cloud of titties.

I have these on my commuter. I am probably 90% paved and 10% hard pack and don’t go more than 5 miles
. They seem to work well but I’m not sure how well they would work for your scenario

Definitely go as wide as your bike can fit. Given that yours has 25-28
c tires on it currently, I’m guessing you’re not going to be able fit much wider than 30-32
c on your bike.
Just going wider (with resulting lower pressures) will help with comfort and compensate for any lack of suppleness, if any. Someone mentioned Panaracer Gravel Kings. I just ordered a set of those.

My guru recommended these and said I might go up from 28 to 32.

My guru suggested the Gravel Kings. He said I could go from 28-32 if I wanted to and should expect but negligible difference in resistance.

Yeah, they sell them in a lot of sizes and varying level of knobbiness.

You sent me a long reply a while back about jailing people and the inherent cost. I read that and it set me to thinking and a reply never materialized. I take your point, but I also think we have to have a certain amount of jailing just because, but current events are causing me to rethink much along those lines.

For the type of riding you describe, you’ll feel no difference. Definitely go larger. The Gravel Kings I ordered are size 650B x 38c.

*THIS IS A THREADJACKING*
I was literally going to ask for help on this topic. If anyone has recommendations on a 26" x ~1.95 MTB tire I’d love to hear them. Not sure on rim width because I dropped the bike off for some maintenance and forgot to check it.
- I prefer fast, smooth hardpacked dirt with minimal roots and stones, but they do exist so I need to be able to deal with them.
- Older rim so has tubes.
- Cornering feel is a must. My biggest complaint about the current tires (besides being worn out) is they don’t inspire confidence. Very squirmy.
- N ot looking to break the bank here. Looking for the best possible bang for $50. I’m flexible on that but really I’m not a hardcore enough rider to make good use of super high end tires.
*YOU MAY NOW RESUME REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING*

My biggest complaint about the rate of incarceration in this country is that it makes communities poorer while making the corporate owners of jails richer. I don’t think that locking people up should be a for-profit operation. I don’t think that prisoners should make goods that make a corporation money while in jail. I think work programs should benefit the state and the people in that state.
Look up Unicor, it's fucked. Paying prisoners $. 23 an hour while making $300 million in profit off of a captive, enslaved workforce. The DOJ has marketing materials which tout the benefits of prison labor like being able to put a "made in America" sticker on your goods. It's fucked.

Are you thread-jacking your own post?

I just started running 38c GravelKings on a second set of wheels for my all arounder/road/cross bike, only 1 ride in on dirt so far but I like them. Otherwise I run 25C Specialized Armadillos. They ride a bit hard but have good grip and wear well, plus they don’t flat easily in all conditions, including gravel. I normally run them at 105psi. I’m still trying to find a happy pressure with the GravelKings but I’m sure it won’t be more than 70-80psi. Both tires have high Lardass Ratings, I can attest .

Probably will later on after your post gets some breathing room ... Figured posting within yours was better than two posts back to back.

I run Pirelli Cinquecento in 28mm width and have been impressed by their performance on all sorts of roads - they can be had out to 35mm . Mates run the utterly bulletproof but 500 gram heavier Schwalbe Marathon in mu ch the same width. Prior to this I have run Challenge Gravel Grinders in 35mm with considerable success.

No issue running 32's would be more support for more weight too.

Your guru?
In town in California the only thing I’d consider is a Continental Touring Plus Reflex. Cheap, tough, readily available.

Yeah, well, I've got a guy... I don't know what to say about him but he races on the road and the trail and has six or eight bikes of various types. He did a 205-mile ride on a Saturday some weeks back.

Y ou should defer to those closer to your own weight/enjoyment level instead of overly fit racer types. Myself riding home with two gallons of milk and another 30 lbs in groceries over that is nothing like being that much heavier plus carrying half that grocery weight in whatever you’re hauling.
The inevitable truth is most everything but high quality low cost tires
are better off bought online fro
m offshore shops. Which are depleted of all cycling related goods at the moment. Take away as much
good advice from everyone as possible
and be happy with what you get. :)
