Summer heat is rough most places but we’re still doing way better than I thought we could!

It was 46 degrees F when I got up at 4:15 this morning. I needed a jacket.

This is why I want to move away from Missouri - our weather is generally pretty terrible. 75F when I woke up with 75% humidity just plain unpleasant.

If I’ve already shared this rant with you, apologies, but I get Conservatives who rail at me about California politics, and I say to them, “Why don’t you move?” Their reply: “I don’t want to get snowed upon,” or, “It’s too hot there.” And I’m like, “Then shut the front door.”
Now, my friend the Old Guy who lives in Tennessee who is an offensively conservative man, put his money where his mouth is and moved from the Central Valley twenty or thirty years ago, so I am happy to entertain his rants about California.

You haven’t shared that yet and I love it. This is part of why I’m moving - the politics are almost insanely conservative here. In response to mass shootings we made guns more accessible and CCW without a permit legal in response to the black lives matter a few years ago we created a ‘Blue Alert’ system like Amber Alert but to notify everyone statewide when there’s a threat against a cop...
It’s been good for my career here as it’s a pretty big IT town with decent salaries and cheap living but I’m done with it and the crazy weather so west here we come. We almost moved 6 years ago to Seattle but I got an offer here (at my current job) that was 10k more than what I was being offered in Seattle so we decided to stay. I definitely regret not just moving then.

Have you been offered the position out here yet?

No - last I heard they hoped to make a decision this week or next. I’ve got it on my calendar to bug my recruiter for an update tomorrow...
I haven’t applied to anything else yet but the job postings are starting to show up again so I think I’ll start to pursue other opportunities soon as well.
Thanks for asking!

Are you going to have a liquidation sale of any of your mining gear?
Are you familiar with the Bay Area? Where’s the job located?

I actually sold most of it in October of last year, just a few cards left that are folding right now. I might sell one of them though when it’s time to move. All the way until isolation I was selling a ton of stuff both tech and garage, I was surprised how much cash I was able to generate from crap I had around the house that hadn’t been touched in far too long...
I’m not super familiar with the area - been there a several times but only to SF/Silicon Valley/San Jose and haven’t spent any time in the East Bay. The job is in Fremont and my wife works with healthcare non-profits and the few she’s talked to about coming our there are based in either SF or Oakland so thinking living somewhere to start like Hayward but we’re definitely not sure yet. I know the logistics of a commute out there are very different than here but I am looking forward to the transit options as well as lane filtering on my motorcycle!
Where are you at out there?

Do you have school-aged children? Even though I teach in hayward, I can’t recommend it as a place to live. I live in Castro Valley. That’s an unincorporated area. Schools are much better than in Hayward, which is to say, a more socioeconomically homogeneous community. The schools are actually kind of mediocre. they pay teachers down to 15% less than surrounding districts, but people will work here for that amount because the community is more homogenous and supportive. I’ve lived here almost 30 years. You can get more house for the same money in Hayward or San Leandro. If you’re not still raising children, and either of those communities are worth a look. The police departments in Hayward and San Leandro are not the best and brightest, but then we are policed by the county sheriff in Castro Valley, and they’re not the best and brightest either. My view of the police as dimmed recently.

No children - just me and my wife . We’ve talked about having one after we move but no decisions yet. We’ve been married 15 years now so it’s starting to get to the point we’re thinking about maybe not having kids at all.
We definitely won’t be buying right off just renting for a while. Thanks for the advice, I seriously appreciate it. Looking for something that’d be reasonably convenient for both my wife and myself which is tough as we don’t know exactly where she will be working yet. Since she loves non-profit work that means her pay isn’t enough to move us out there so we move me and a job then figure out hers once we get there.
My view of the competence of police has always been shit but I’ve personally known too many people that became cops to think of it any other way.
