Picked up this Bad Boy last week for the Always Nice Price of Free Dollars, from a friend:
His yard is steep, and he really wants a self-propelled mower. This one is self-propelled, but needs a belt, needs rear wheels, new blades, and... I think that’s it? But he’s like, “a whole new mower is only like twice as much as just the parts, so... here. Free.” I obviously brought him some beer.
And h ell yeah I’ll spend $50 making this a bit better. The idea was that I’d beat around on our land hitting sticks and rocks and who cares about what happens to this, but then I realized how easy it is to just mow small sections and/or edges of our lawn with this, as opposed to our riding mower. So... I’m gonna fix it at least a little. Our yard is flat so I don’t care about the self-propelled bit, but the belt is only like $13 so why not? It’s kind of a pain to push against the transmission, to be honest. But hey, it does a pretty nice job as-is!
Oh, and he said “at least it always starts on the first pull” which I assumed was a way of saying it’s reliable, but no, really. It had been stored for the winter with no fuel in it, he ran it dry in the fall. I put some gas in it, expecting at least two pulls starting from bone dry, but no. First pull, vroom! . Gotta love a Honda!

I’ve had good luck with our toro, but I wanted the Honda when we were buying one. The Honda was twice as much for the same size mowing deck.

Like a true honda guy , I think you should at least try to bolt on a Chinese turbo

I have to keep a small mower around for the same reason. It’s impossible to squeeze the riding mower into some areas in the yard and I get better results with the mower than the weedeater.

I have a literal snail shell around, I should tape it to the top and post that here

The price of free is always nice!
I wish my mower was a one pull start. Hell, I’d settle for a 10 pull start. If I go more than about two days without using it it won’t start right away. And forget the beginning of the season, that’s like 100 pulls or more. Not too thrilled with the engine on my Cub Cadet.

That’s frustrating. I always always always run fuel stabilizer in any small engine I have. But I can say none of my other stuff starts on a first pull, even other Hondas!

When my house flooded last year, my mower was in the shed, with a little tool box on it. A few days after the flood I cut the grass, the Honda mower pull started first try, as always. Later that day opened up the tool box, and it was full of water. The mower was completely submerged. I'm still using it, haven't even replaced the spark plugs since it was submerged, still pull starts first try. Honda's are incredible

I have a Honda mower that’s dying on me, after 10+ years of abuse. I changed the oil and I think that might have been what did her in...

They’re expensive, for sure. But there’s a reason.
My 6 neighbors near me have: Honda, Honda, Honda, Honda Powered Craftsman, Honda, Cub Cadet. All similar spec, convertible self propelled 20-22" mowers. Guess which one take some work to get running every week?

My parents bought a Honda self propelled mower in 1990-1989, I can’t remember. It’s still running and starts on the first pull. The engine has been rebuilt once about 15 years ago. I mowed about 1.5 acres with it about once every two weeks when I was a teen. The day I left for college they bought a ride-around.

I have two small kids I never sit down anyway. Case in point, I just sat down to type this and then do some work and one of them needs help with something already.

Nothing better than an old mower that just won’t die. I picked up an old mulcher with a B&S motor on it for $10 from a yard sale. It had to have been at least 20 years old. Thing would never die, always started after one pull. Ran it until both the handle and deck cracked on me.
