Sooo I ordered a refurbished PC 3 wks ago and the tracking number said it delivered yesterday...TO MY MAILBOX?!?!?!
Yeah, it didn’t show up. Something else did with tracking number on it. It was unexpected. I used PayPal so I will get my money back if the company can’t fix its mistake (withholding detail info until resolved).
Anyway, I’ve been angry window shopping on another computer that needs to be replaced as well since these two are both 14 years old. Gonna stop by a local used computer place tomorrow to see if they have a cheap PC with an i5 4th gen to an i7 3rd gen for under $150. That would take care of one. The one that needs attention is the lead photo, the one that I thought I was getting replaced yesterday.
The GTX 460 GPU would cause the display to flicker for just a quick second. But when I removed it from the motherboard, uninstalled all the GTX drivers, and rebooted the PC, the motherboard would cause the display to go blank for between 5-15 seconds before coming back on. Hopefully, that clears the GTX of failing but will test it on another mobo later.
I figured I bite the bullet and get a new CPU, MOBO, & RAM. For the sake of future proofing for at least another decade+ and staying on the cheap ( under $300, just like my current units 14 years ago), this is what I’ve come up with:
All of these I can get relatively quickly (2-5 days).
While the MOBO and RAM are pretty much set, I’m leaning towards the Ryzen 5 1600 since if my current GPU needs to be replaced, I could probably get away with one for less than $60 shipped.
What does Oppo think?

One can argue brands but if that’s what you’re comfortable with, I say go for it. Even if you get 3 years out of it, c an’t go wrong with that money.

If you’re looking to get 10 years plus out of it you need a better board, atleast a B450 motherboard. You’ll be very limited what future AMD processors you can put in the B320 chipset.
I’d also be hesitant to put in a CPU released 3 years ago if you want it to last that long.
A B450 chipset board plus a Ryzen 5 3600 is a kickass combo (what I’m typing this on now) that will be super stable for a long time.
Edit: If you have a Microcenter nearby they’re much cheaper than Amazon.

I've been using AMD all my life, but want to try an Intel. If you have suggestions, I'm all ears.

I’ve never owned anything but Intel but only because AMD was nothing more than an outlier when I started buying . T hings have now moved on and I have no opinion eith er way.

I’m assuming that Ryzen 5 1600 is the AF, which is actua lly a Zen+ (Ryzen 2XXX) chip released last October, and thus a bit of a different animal than the “real” Ryzen 5 1600.
boredalways: If you get the 1600, make sure you do get the 1600 AF and not the original. I’d assume that’s mostly what’s in channel right now, but definitely worth double checking.

B450 MOBO aren’t readily available, would be at least 11-30 days.
No MicroCenters in Indiana. I could road trip to one this week since I’m still jobless
There are combo B450/Ryzen5 3600 for $220, but the likelihood of me driving 4 hours round-trip are slim before Wednesday and they might be out of stock by then.
Even though what I listed from Amazon maybe old by a couple of years, it should hold me over for 10 years at least, right? I don't plan on gaming on it any higher than retro gaming, so upgrading shouldn't be an issue until it starts to fail like my current 14 year old AM2 mobos.

My saga was similar - I ordered a battery and an SSD for my little Inspiron converti ble laptop. The SSD showed up no problem. The battery got the wrong address applied and was sent to Massachusetts . I said screw them and asked for a refund. Meanwhile, I ordered the battery from Amazon and it arrived today.
