I finally have one in my grasp: a manual, 4wd, 6 cylinder XJ, only a couple of hours from here.
And it’s cheap!
And dear heavens does it look frightful. I think even at $1400 it’s a CP.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Still tempted to find a mechanic in the area to give it a look, but only a little tempted.

Off topic of your XJ fantasy... but I’m working back in Indy again. My coworker and I was wondering if there is any place fairly close to the East Indy side to go fishing, at 3:30AM right when we get off work. Wouldn’t mind chucking some plastic worms until the sun comes up.
I’ll be there until July M-Th.

Looks like garbage. And I know garbage.

Looks better than most XJs I see on the road

Short answer: maybe. This place has caught my eye a few times, and it’d be worth giving them a ring. Their FB page claims they’re always open. Highway 52 and German Church Road.

I see a post there about a temporary phone number to use : 317-935-3821
Indiana requires a fishing permit for public waters, but that presumably doesn’t apply there.

Other than that, I’d just search online. Fort Harrison is a destination for local fisherfolk but they don’t open until dawn and you’d need a license. That’s about as much as I know about east side fishing spots.

Damn. I’d say at least half the ones I see are much better than that.

For $ 1400, check it out. If it sounds like a bad lifter, snag it. Hell, even if it has rod knock, a good 4.0 costs like, $50.

I still see lots and rarely do they look that bad.

For as loved as those trucks were? They largely have not survived well... it’s odd.

If you touched that with a 10 foot pole you would likely get a terrible disease.

I’m not worried about the engine. It’s everything else that’s horrifying, even disregarding the rust.

My Jeep club doesn’t let people in with XJs, because they are too often treated as disposable in off-roading situations. Get it buried in the mud? Leave it.
There’s definitely a weird dynamic with these. Some are really cherished, others...obviously not so much.

Heh. That’s the wilderness code, right?
“Leave No Footprints, Leave No Trace... well, unless it’s an XJ. Then we’re Mesabi R ecycling...”

My sister had one she loved... and it didn’t last. So, she bought another one... and it didn’t last.

What was the post-mortem on them?
![]() 06/07/2020 at 12:24 |

Would they allow an XJ that’s been restored? Nobody would abandon a vehicle that’s gotten lots of love.

I imagine so, but the topic hasn’t really come up much . Of course, I’ve also been incommunicado for a year now, so for all I know they’ve converted to a Miata club.

First one rotted out in a few Minnesota winters. Second one got hit in a parking lot fender bender, it was already showing some rot, and was deemed a total loss. It seemed fixable but she let it go and bought a GC.

Yeah, I can believe Minnesota wouldn’t be the most hospitable environment for an XJ’s structural integrity.

We used to go up to The North Shore... and it was always fun to see how rotted out the late model Yukons, F150s and Buicks would be in the diner parking lot.
“How can a three year old Ford have rusted completely through the wheel arches?”
I swear MN DOT mixes sulphuric adic into the road salts and de-icers.

Unicorn? I thought these were called “Holy Grail”?

I’ve seen it happen . Don’t know how common it is, but reputations are hard to live down.

David does throw that term around a fair bit, but I’m pretty sure the holy grail of XJs would have yet another feature or two, like the full-time 4wd option that was available on some of them.

A Holy Grail unicorn would be one with no rust on it :p

Frankly it doesn’t seem that bad. Unless there’s massive electrical issues undisclosed, an afternoon of junkyarding will get you everything you need, and you’ll have a nice backup/beater/toy.

Looks like someone agreed with you. I had just talked myself into getting it checked out.
